I am getting really sick of my monthly cable bills, especially given that while I have access to a couple of hundred channels, there is $hit on TV all the time. Anyone have any tips on giving up cable and still being able to get local news and my local sports teams? Thanks.

Sorry for the following long post in advance You can try Sling, Hulu Live TV, youtube tv, ATT TV Now. I would first do a few things. Make sure you know exactly what channels you want to watch and look to see if they are included. Especially your sports channels, they may be free on some services and an add-on on others. Second, be sure to try them out on free trial basis. The user interfaces on them can be perplexing at first. They typically are not channel based menus like cable channel guides but rather contextual based interfaces based on what you want to see. Plus some user interfaces are better than others. Also, pay very close attention to DVR and storage capabilities. You will definitely want to try these out on each service. This is where you will find differences in user interface design and some of them can be difficult to use. Before you go off and try out the services, make sure you understand the costs of your internet service. Be sure you understand contract and costs after the initial offer term expires. You may also need to do something with you home phone. Many phone services are bundled with TV and cutting the cord on cable may impact your phone service especially when evaluating costs. There are devices that you can get that allow you to do your phone over the internet, e.g. Ooma. There are others, you will have to google this. Ooma is a device that you just buy and transfer your phone number over. Check these services out, they are pretty cool. Lastly, be careful about your phone service during power outages. If you have bad cell service you may want to be sure you are comfortable with the type of service you get during a power outage. This is two sided coin. You care about be able to reach fire dept and police if your internet is out. However, if you have good cell service this is not a huge issue.

Play the cable companies off of each other. My contract with Verizon expired a couple of months ago and they wanted to jack my monthly bill so I went to Xfinity and got the same channel lineup and am saving $60 per month and I like Xfinity WAY MORE! Also, think about ditching the DVR, everything is on demand now and buy your own router instead of paying for one monthly. Just my two cents...

We also reduced the monthly bill about $100. We share Sling with my son and his father in law (3 Tv's), have Prime, Netflix, Hulu. If you like movies you don't need anything else, yesterday we changed the plan to the ATT elite and they gave me HBO for free. At the end went down to $106.00 a month.

Internet and phone Xfinity $65 a month. Satellite DirecTV 200 channels plus local channels $43.08 a month. I have had satellite TV with DirecTV for 26 years. Maybe why I pay so little. Bottom line is they're all a bunch of Thieves.

Have had direct tv for a couple of years. 4 TVs and in the promotion it was under $100. Promotion ran out they upped it to $142. I called and said I’d be researching other options. They transferred me to “loyalty dept”. They made an offer at $132, I said no then they offered 122, no again. Finally got them back to $92 a month. I have over 200 channels and can always find what I’m looking for.
Now, went to a Homeshow two weeks ago and ran into an old student who is selling online streaming. Bought a 4K firestick, used wife’s amazon prime account to hook up and download his app. Over 3000 channels including local news. It’s $15 a month and no monthly contract. I can get a contract for 3 TVs for 6 months at $90. Just have to buy two more fire sticks. Just make sure you have unlimited wi-fi cause limited wi if will kill your bill. I have AT&T wi fi at $50 a month.
So I can pay $1200 for direct tv or $180 for streaming. So, that’s two full tanks of gas and many more days on the water
Look up coastal streaming.com. Tell Robert or Donna Todd sent you. I get zero kickback but want my SBO crew taken care of.

Writing checks? Step into online banking. It’s the easiest way to pay. I know,,, but I'm a little old school when it comes to handling money. I do have several items attached to one card, so one check covers many.
