Has anyone painted their boat?
I am getting tired of trying to stay on top of the oxidation on my blue hull. It's in great shape, very glossy, looks like a million bucks every spring after I polish and seal it. But around the time mid to late summer approaches, the stern and transom which takes a more direct beating from the UV rays, tends to start showing signs of chaulkiness, despite repolishing/waxing it again mid summer. I think it's just the nature of gelcoat esp darker gelcoats.
It just gets tiresome and I am jealous of my neighbor who doesn't do jack shit to his 15 yr old Boston Whaler Outrage and his paint still looks fantastic, never dulls or gets chaulky.
I reached out to a couple of shops for rough estimates and I was SHOCKED by the prices being thrown out esp after doing some research on cost. I was quoted $8k to $9k ($300 per foot) to repaint my hull from the waterline up to the rub rail!
As an alternative and while I am a bit of a skeptic, I got a quote from a local detailer to ceramic coat the hull. He wanted $2400 to compound/polish and ceramic coat the hull, which I thought was crazy. The rub with this stuff is, it lasts up to 18 months, but you have to buy/use a special product to maintain it and if you don't no warranty for you! Of course the detailer wants to be the guy that does it every month and that will cost you. So then after 18 months I guess you have to pay to reapply it.
Anyway, I just think these shops are quoting crazy numbers to paint, but maybe I am just reading a lot of bad information on how much it should cost $100 - $150 per foot.

I feel your pain. Those darker colors are beautiful when they're new but they become a nightmare. White hulls old school will never fail. Maybe some type of graphic if it's only the transom you're concerned about cover it up.
My cousins got a 27 ft Express style boat he had painted 2 years ago 12 /13 k is that crazy or what. Dark blue they told him he doesn't have to wax it or touch it for 5 years. And that was only from the water line to the rub rail

A wrap will cost +/-$1500 or more and cant be repaired. The way I am around a dock it will look like shit in no time.

I’ve priced painting in the past and got the same range. Paint included 200 per foot seemed to be the going rate. Higher prices came from specialty boat renovation shops

Boy I sure wish my salary kept pace with things today. Lol
$8-9k to do just the hull seems a bit high. Quite a bit

And getting responses from some of these painters is like pulling teeth. I emailed this one guy nicks boat works 3 times, no reply. I called and his VM said to email him! Lol. I left a message saying I emailed a couple of times already, so I sent him another damn email and he finally replied today.
These guys are slammed with work right now. He said can't take me until summer which is fine anyway. Heaven forbid I have a question...
