The weather (seas) were crap for our opening weekend. Made a short trip Saturday with the family and got a 5 man limit within 30 min. Seas were 4-5 foot which was a blessing. It kelp a lot of the boats at the dock and I was able to hit some close in spots. I was back at the marina by 9:00 am. Got the boat and fish cleaned then jumped on a buddy’s boat and went back out. I planned on staying at the dock on Sunday because the forecast was predicted to be worse than the day before. Went to the marina to see if anyone was going out and drink coffee with the old salts and the wind wasn’t blowing. Only 2 boats went out, a 36 Cape Horn and a 34 cat. A guy that used to be our neighbor at the camp came up and wanted to go but didn’t want to take his boat, so I said hop on I’ll go. The seas were just as bad as the day before. I hit a close spot 10 miles out and had a 4 man limit in 30 min again. Plenty of fish but horrible weather. I’m hoping for better weather and bigger fish next weekend.

Good going Richard.
How the hell are you able to keep over good bottom in those conditions? I assume there was wind, waves and current?

Good going Richard. How the hell are you able to keep over good bottom in those conditions? I assume there was wind, waves and current? Years of practice! Luckily the current was not bad. I put the stern into the wind and waves and was able to hold the spot. I never had to correct our location the whole time. It’s hard when we have a west to east current with south wind. I can do it but will have to relocate often.

So do you pretty much have to stay on the throttles the entire time while your crew fishes or do you get a chance to run back and drop a line before the boat moves out of position?

I’m at the helm the whole time. I’m letting my nephew learn how to hold the spot some. I did make 1 drop and caught a fish on Saturday. I’ve caught plenty of bottom fish so I don’t mind letting everyone else catch some. I enjoy the offshore fishing more, trolling and chunking for tuna.

I like to catch but I take a lot of enjoyment putting my kids and friends on fish even if I dont hold a rod. It's a different kind of fishing.

Nice job Richard. Power holding a spot while bottom fishing can be tricky.
Im sticking with the theory that if there are no pictures it didn't happen.

Sounds like some good trips in spite of the seas. What sizes were you catching?

Sounds like some good trips in spite of the seas. What sizes were you catching? Small mostly. 16-24 inches. I have been running some charters in state waters (out to 9 miles) in public reefs. I have some simi private spots out further that hold some nice ones. Got a 25, 22 and 20 pound in one trip last year.
