I need to replace my old Garmin 3010 GPS and sonar. Works really well in shallow water but when I get off shore it's worthless it just doesn't have the capacity the mark fish in deep water. I want to stick with Garmin because I have 5212 that will be my backup it's slow these days bit works fine. I'll leave the 5212 tied into the radar., No sonar on the 5212. Looking at these new units are very confusing to many different options. I'd like this unit as my main navigation and sonar. I'd prefer a transom Mount transducer over a through hull. For the guys out there with the knowledge on the electronics point me in the right direction so I can make a good choice.

Glen, fwiw I went with a through hull and left my transom mount. I decided on the B175 M which is a 1k watt ducer. I ran out to 700' and was marking fish on the bottom.
I can run on plane and read bottom.
I'd stay with Garmin so that you can get the functionality on both units via N2k network.
Not sure how much you want to invest but I'm over happy with the B175M. There is also a B175 HW th as t casts a wider beam (less focused) which is also a great unit but doesn't Mark as good down deep.

Hey Finatic,
I would get the Garmin GPS 8410xsv and pair it with the Garmin GT54UHD transducer. Not sure what your budget is but that's a nice set up that should do anything you want short of getting a thru-hull ducer. I would also call Garmin and pick there brain before I pulled the trigger. You should be able to plug the 5212, the new plotter and new GT54 into the NEMA 2000 backbone and be able to select radar, plotter, and sonar or a combination of them on either of your 2 MFD's. does the 5212 not have Sonar capability? I went with garmin 8612xsv with b175HW though hull and the GT30 Transon Mount for clearview/sideview. I also went with GXM 54 for weather. I would recommend that if you go off shore. Went with Garmin fusion radar as well. I would also recommend that - man I only had the boat a few months and already very glad I had it - caught in bad fog twice and bad rain storm. I would definitely go with the biggest screen you can fit in you will be happy you did. Also, while you have everything out, I would also put in a fell marine wireless MOB device.
The only issue I had was interference from the GT30TM with the B175HW and only in very shallow water. I changed the GT30TM freq from 455KHz to 800Khz and it fixed the problem. However doing this reduces the width of side view and depth a bot. But that is not a problem for me since I run in NE and the depths are not out of range of 800khz.

Go with the 8600 or 8400 series units with xsv. You can get a cable to run from your 5212 to the new unit so they can share all info. Garmin makes some nice transom mounted ducers but I would go with a thru hull.

Okay, great info. Thanks so much, I will be doing a little research this week then making a decision.

I would also suggest looking for compatibility with the Fantom radar system, having radar overlay, plus all the features associated with is great for piece of mind when fog sets in.
I also love AIS for monitoring the commercial traffic around me. Plus the receiver is cheap
Just to add couple more thing to consider.
I have a 742xs and a 946 linked screens an love my system, compared to other boats I have fished on..

1 more thing, offshore trolling, really don’t care what is happening much below 100’, other than knowing that you are going over a contour. Mostly looking for fish within 50’ of surface..

Or ditch the Garmin and step up to Simrad!
Seriously though, I’d be looking to make sure everything is nmea2000 compatable, it being the latest data protocol standard. If you want AIS receive only, take a look at the Icom M506. It’s kind of cool, ships show on my chart image, I can touch the image and it tells me ship name, touch that and get ship registration info. I’d never use it to se where the head boats were bottom fishing or charters were trolling.... 😁

It's a great unit for the price. I agree with fishnfool on the choice.
I've got a 1042xsv and I'm very happy with it. Love to have the 12", but space is limited. It really has a lot of capabilities beyond what I'm doing: sonar, Garmin Fantom radar, NMEA 2000 for the SIMRAD Autopilot and I even use the NMEA 0183 to interface with the Standard Horizon GX2200 to display AIS on the screen. Nice to have the AIS displayed when offshore so I know exactly where someone is when they report they're catching.

I was going to contribute but if you're sticking with Garmin, never mind...you're screwed. But seriously, my only 2 cents would be to make sure you can use touch screen AND buttons. My old 7612 was touch only and it drove me nuts in rough seas. Sidescan was a nice toy for awhile but not really that useable for the fishing I do. Having AIS networked from my VHF has also proven handier than I thought...I've had a couple occasions where I needed to radio commercial traffic and it was great to call them by name vs radioing "Calling big gray boat to the west" lol.

Wanted to update everyone on my Electronics. First thanks to everyone and their opinions on what to purchase. After several discussions with my go to electronic guy, who is a member here and I'll let him speak for himself if he chooses to do so...lol Poor guy I drove him crazy. I went with the Garmin 1242 xsv touch and the Air Mar B175HW. That transducer is huge, I had no idea of its size,,,, I do now.I did the installation on the transducer today we'll finish everything else up tomorrow. A few pics.

Like your choice of transducer. Good luck with the touch Garmin. I can't use one very well. Hopefully it will do good for you. Of course, I have to admit in rough seas I have trouble with the dials and buttons on my 1042 at times.
