The saga of my port motor's leaky trim/tilt assembly continues... For those that have been foowing, after having narrowed down the source as being the joint between the trim motor and piston housing, I ordered the 5 o-rings which are known to fail and cause this leak. I asked the shop/boat builder that is painting my boat to replace the orings. The tried and said it was too pitted inside after they pulled it apart. They replaced the o'rings and it would still leak. Now the only choice is buy a new unit. The shop said the new unit is $2600. I am contemplating buying used which would save $1500, but then again that's a crap shoot. Theres one on ebay for $1200 thatd supposedly been tested and has a 90 day guarantee. Btw, this is the same damn motor I just spent a couple of grand on to address the oil leak. While some of it is self inflicted I'm bleeding money this year on the boat. Any suggestions on what to do? Should I bite thebullet and just get the new unit or roll the dice with a used?

I can't give that kind of advice on new or used. If you've got the tools and time, a new housing unit from SIM is around $800. Of course, if your luck is like mine you'd find once disassembled you also need other parts, so figure a few more dollars and some extra time.
A whole power trim unit is probably much easier to replace than rebuilding from the housing unit. $1200 vice $2600 sure makes the used one sound good, but .....

Thanks
I'm dont want to mess with rebuilding anything. all of the other stuff will still be original and who knows what issues I'll run into.
I talked to Andy at SIM and believe it or not he actually didnt think the used unit was a bad idea but conditioned with how much you could afford and what your wife will let you get away with LOL
Andy was kind enough to offer me another 5% off his price which is below retail to begin with. So $2400 for a new one, plus if I bought it from him I'd save 6% MD sales tax. I could have it sent 2 day delivery for $45.
I asked my paint shop if they would care if I bought it from Andy. Considering what I'm spending I suspect they'll be okay with it.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. Sorry you've had so much trouble this year, but it's a boat. Need I say more?

Sorry to hear about this. We just had to replace the little metal tube that carries the fluid. It developed a hole. So we lost all the fluid www.boats.net/product/yamaha/61A-43835-01-00?ref=7fb824c01ce5848744bc823e8f9d780a8bc176ef. At first we thought it was a defective seal. They were just replaced, but it was the pipe. The fluid would leak onto the metal cap which covers the seals. I take it that you keep your boat in a wet slip!? As do we. In the process of thinking about moving to a dry stack. We get a lot of growth on the pistons and we are constantly cleaning them. Is that how you developed corrosion on the inside?

I slip but i dont think that's the cause. The area that is leaking is above the water line. I also paint the portion of my motor that's in the water with anti foul paint which helps to keep my engine bracket in better shape.
Unfortunately these orings going bad was not uncommon to engines of my year. I just dont think I caught it and addressed it soon enough which allowed moisture/salt water in leading to the corrosion.
It sucks. This one particular motor has been a PIA.
My shop just offered to match SIM's price which makes it an easier decision and process.

Once again sorry to hear about it. As I said we are contemplating going to a dry stack only because my motors sit so far down. I would be torn also between the rebuilt and the new unit. But if the rebuilt is offered with a 90 day warranty, I think I would go that route especially if you are having issues with the motor. You may need the $1000 for something else. Just my .02.

Thanks Barry. I decided to bite the bullet and replace with new. My luck the used unit would start leaking from the same area in 12 months and I'd be right back where I started. At nearly the half the cost of new unit and that my motors have a ton of life left I'd rather not worry about it.
I'm going to keep the other unit for parts for my other motor. I just replaced the trim seals so they are new, the pistons are in good shape and the motor still works.

Good choice on the new. Good luck with her. Maybe all your troubles are behind you now. Gawd I hope so! Otherwise I'll be into this motor about half of what I can buy a new motor for. Now if that other shop can only get the oil leak to stop. The good news is, the boat is painted! They are doing the boot stripe and bottom paint today.

All you can do is make what you think is the best decision. I know I had an Albemarle that I kept throwing parts at for 3 years. Finally bit the bullet and re-powered. Spent more than twice what the re-power cost me. What was worse 2 1/2 years later I sold it and bought the 2660. Sometimes you just get so deep it's hard to not say this is the last thing. Kind of addictive. Best of luck. I hope that this will be the last of the problems. Barry
