I go out to the light tower regularly to fish. It's an abandoned old coast guard lighthouse with lots of man made reefs, 15 miles off of Cape Henry. 6 guys were rescued yesterday thanks to one of them having a PLB, otherwise this could have been a much worse story. My question is how did the boat get capsized? Nothing in any of the articles explains that.
One picture from the helicopter showed 4 guys on the overturned hull without life vests and 2 went to the rusted falling apart light tower. Another question: If weather was getting bad enough to capsize the boat, why didn't they wear PFDs?
My guess is inexperienced but fearless youth and they made a big mistake. I've never been to the light tower on a weekend without 10-100 other boats being out there fishing. I guess the other boats left when the weather got bad, or was predicted to get bad. They got lucky that one of them had the sense to bring a PLB.
