Good afternoon, I just picked up a 15 ft Sailfish to add to my fleet. I live in Marion, MA, a small town on Buzzards Bay. I also own a 23 ft Com-pac 23 sailboat that I moor in a small cove in an area called Piney Point. My new-to-me Sailfish will be moored there as well.
The previous owner only owned the boat for a short time and wasn't able to provide many details. The boat is in pretty good shape considering it's age. The transom appears to be in excellent shape and the stringers supporting the floor, from what I can see, are solid.
I'm still going through the boat and have some initial, obvious work this fall and spring, to get ready for a May 2021 launch. Work will include straightening out the electricals (lights, bilge pump, etc), fixing a few dings, replacing the steering cable and maybe the steering box and of course, bottom painting.
Two areas that I'm unsure of are the internal gas tank and the stern ports below the water line.
The previous owner used an external gas tank so the condition of the internal tank is unknown. I'll need to attempt to pump out whatever is in there and if I use it (with new gas), be sure to filter it with a Racor fuel filter. The gas gauge may or may not work. It's disconnected, plus I'm not sure where the sending unit is located. I don't have an observation port in front of or behind the console where it's likely to be located. I don't mind creating an observation port, but would want to make sure of the placement to get at the gas gauge sending unit.
The stern transom has three ports below the water line. The port on the left has a threaded plug and clearly drains the bilge when the boat is out of the water. I'm not sure what the other two ports do, but can probably figure it out by blowing air into them. Are they scuppers for drainage?
I spoke with Aaron at Sailfish Customer Service today. He was very helpful and will try to research these questions for me.
Does anyone have any insights on these questions ? Thx.
