Got to admit I haven't liked this thread very much. Feel your pain, but now I wonder about the long term on my engine. I used to think Yamaha was rock solid, but started reading a few years back about problems and your issues have driven it home. Really wish you good luck going forward.
Oh...when I was discussing all this with the Admiral, she said "Why not just get a new engine". I asked what she thought it would cost - "I don't know, 5 or 6 thousand". It was hard to keep a straight face.

Oh...when I was discussing all this with the Admiral, she said "Why not just get a new engine". I asked what she thought it would cost - "I don't know, 5 or 6 thousand". It was hard to keep a straight face. Sorry my tale of whoas caused you to lose faith in your Yammys. Well look at this way, my engines were put in service some 11/12 yrs ago, they have over 1k hrs on them. They were manufactured in 2007 so they're 15 yrs old. Up until recently they have been rock solid. Notwithstanding the minor oil leak in one motor while the engine was tilted up, the only other significant issue I had last year were the trim/tilt assemblies (made by Shoa technically) where it's not uncommon for the seals to leak on older units - while inconvenient and can be expensive depending which seal is leaking and how you decide to repair, i consider this is more routine maintenance for a motor that gets up there in years/hrs. The exhaust corrosion is something else entirely and is clearly a manufacturers defect but it doesnt effect every motor and newer motors seem more resilient. But beyond that, in all fairness these motors have served me well esp considering the environment they operate within. I think all outboards have their known idiosyncrasies. Take Zuke for example, I have read numerous reports of the drive shaft siezing into place on relatively new motors such that the owner cant drop the lower. It requires cutting it off and an expensive list of parts to fix. Apparently Suzuki now recommends dropping the lower EVERY 100hrs so the shaft doesnt sieze in place!! CRAZY I hope you can sleep better after reading this

Thanks for a confidence builder. I always worry since I go offshore with a single engine.I’ve been trying to figure how to add a kicker for a safety fallback. If I trailered it, no problem, but since it’s in a boatel having the engine raised rather than tilted is a requirement and I haven’t been comfortable with the solutions so far. Still looking.
Anyway glad you’re on the way to repaired and back on the water. Taking youngest granddaughter out tomorrow between her exam days. Let her de-stress a bit and I may get her to fish a little. She only likes catching and if I can’t put her on fish in 15 minutes or so, she’s done fishing. Ah..youth.

Instead of a kicker (unless you plan to troll with it) I’d invest in a satphone. Even with twin 150’s on my 2360, I can’t get on plane single engine. From 40-60 miles out…. I’ll be headed in but calling tow boat at the same time.

My inReach has satellite text messaging. Got sea tow to agree to come get me up to 100 miles out ( Gulf Stream is 80 miles out). Just figured with kicker I could have a way back...slowly, and a way for slow troll. Probably not the best idea, but it would provide some piece of mind.

Did you get stuck or just had a conversation with Sea tow to see how far they would come out to get you.

When I got the inReach I was heading out to catch Mahi fairly regularly at about 30-40 miles out on my single engine Robalo. I asked the local Sea Tow what my policy would provide if I contacted them. They said if I messaged my wife and she called with my coordinates, member number and problem - they'd come out to get me up to 100 miles out.
Hope never to test that promise and I hope by now they have texting or email capability so I could contact them directly. Guess I need to check with the local Sea Tow to ensure the 100 miles still holds and to find out if I could text or email them directly (couldn't before).
I know problems happen and multiple engine isn't always the solution. I was out late last year about 60 miles offshore and watched a triple engine Grady being towed in. Didn't ever find out who or why, but my guess was an electrical failure or fuel. Can't imagine all 3 engines failed on what looked like a new boat.

Well I'm back in the water! Picked her up today. Motors fired up good, boat ran good. BUT damn if I didnt get to the dock and the motor that was repaired was difficult to shift into neutral, it required force and skipped past neutral a few times grinding into reverse. I did notice the RPMs were a bit high 800+ They also got grease all over my combing pads. Sent the shop that did the work an email this evening about the shifting issue. Said I'd be happy to try and adjust the shift linkage if they thought that was the issue. I've read high idle RPMs can make shifting into neutral a problem too and that is a little more involved. Getting my boat to a ramp and hauling it over the bridge is a chore. Is it too much to expect to have them come to my boat to get this figured out?

Good luck with the "come to my boat". I only had one dealer ever do that and damned if my marina didn't tell him to never come back unless they registered (paid money). I moved to a marina that allows any mechanic with proof of insurance to work on boats.
Hope your shop will send someone. Not nice that you had to find the problem....and that they didn't clean up after repair.

Why are people effing pigs, grease on your boat and to stupid or lazy to clean it. My rule of thumb after what ever the work when you leave it's correct and looks like you were never there.

I was a little irritated by the grease. I mean someone saw it, it didn't even bother to clean it. This is a good family owned/run business too, Yamaha master techs. First experience was better. Good honest shops are so hard to find, while it ticks me off I don't want to piss them off so they wont work on my boat. They are back logged 3 weeks so they certainly dont need my business. Not saying it's right but alternatives are much further away.

Good news, all it took to fix the shift issue was an adjustment to the shift linkage. The alignment marks weren't lined up - guess they missed that when reassembling everything, oh well.
