First trip on my sailfish for this year, my oldest, Dillon(16), an one of his friends as crew. Left home little after midnight, 1.5 hour tow to ramp in Chinoteague Va, slow trip out inlet at 230, beautiful ride out, decided to head more south than usual , with strong southerly wind forcast for afternoon ride in, plus warmest water off mouth of Norfolk canyon. 60 miles later, few minutes after sunrise approaching 100fa line, water temp shooting up, go lines in, 20 minutes tight to 30 lb yfin, another run off as soon as start moving after boating 1 fish but pulls hook. Next couple hours quiet, I decide to settle in beanbag for nap, Dillon has trolling plan, I barely get eyes closed when boys start yelling, hard runoff on long rigger, marlin jumping... Dillon been dreaming of a marlin, we weren’t expecting one this early, but here it was,, after first couple jumps fish stays deep, 50 minutes later, an 45 boat circles later finally get fish to boat, he’s visibily bleeding, so we decide to harvest. Boys over the moon. Another small but legal yellow fin little later, head in little after noon. Wind picks up as promised plus some , pushing 25 kts as we get close to inlet, but mostly behind us ,little wet, no other issues.
