I went fishing for fluke, only caught shorts. But did have a front seat to a whale of a show

That's awesome, I never get tired of watching them while on the hunt for tuna.

Nice? How far north are you? When I go out, it’s through the Barnegat Inlet. But, we don’t go outside too often.

Whale was off of Rumson. I go out of Atlantic Highlands or Sharkriver. Once in a while I put in at Brick and head to Barnegat light, that has always been to meet friends and take boat rides.

What’s this fluke you speak of? They are apparently extinct here in NC. No season at all this year … or next.

I had a 22'bowrider-always looked out of place with the Raritan bay fleet and i have photos of multiple fish many times. On my much bigger dollar and all kinds of techno stuff sailfish, I see more whales then I catch fluke.

Dave, great video of the whale! Having just come back from Alaska, we did see some similar activity but I have to say you were closer and there was more action there that we saw. I'd say that was a rare and wonderful day!

You working to get USAToday more subscribers? Can't view it unless I pay up. Anyway, here in my area of the world we get humpback juveniles in late winter, early spring. Talk about unpredictable. The Admiral and I were watching one about 100 yards from the boat. It headed directly toward the boat, flipped it's tailfin and dived right under our boat. I watched the bubbles surround our boat and feared it rising underneath us. It did rise, but about 100 yards from us again and it 'waved' goodby before heading out to sea.
I agree they can be dangerous, especially the juveniles. The older ones keep their distance, but juvies... well you know how it goes. There was lots of bait on the fishfinder and now I know to move away when I see we're in the thick of it. The Admiral wasn't able to go whale watching this year, but is adamant that we keep the boat and that she'll go next winter.
Just have to add.. People are dangerous too. Same trip, a Navy fast attack boat pointed their bow gun at us and told us to hurry up and move out of the channel as a submarine was coming through. I think we were more concerned about the Navy than the whale. We'd seen lots of subs, so we weren't as excited to see it as we were the whale.

Jeesh, scary. I was watching a video the other day of an Ocra that seemed to be attacking a boat. The guys took off and the Orca gave chase. No thanks!

Sorry about the link, I'm not intending to sell or promote anything! If you haven't seen the video, Google it and you can view it in a number of sources as it is all over the news right now.
Keep the faith that you and the Admiral can see the whales soon Richard! Just keep your distance!!!

Found it. That would be a very bad day on the water.
