OK, jokes aside - I went to my bait shop this AM after driving the 1.5 hours from my home to the boat only to learn that they and no other shops in the area have crabs available for Black Fishing. WTF!
So, I did maintenance on my other boat and spoke with some of the guys as they came back in. They had the same issue but had crabs from the last time they went out. Not much of a bite yet, I'm told. Perhaps the water is till too warm.

Dam that really sucks. If you drive through New Haven on 95 on your way to the boat Dee's bait is minutes off the highway they are open at 5AM and always have crabs. I've never seen them without. Not the best neighbor hood lock up any gear.

Hell I would be more pissed off about having a 1.5 hour drive to the boat!!! And maintenance would be out of the question. It would be squid time or artificial bait. Rag’s

Black fish or Tautog eat shellfish and have human-like teeth. We use crab as bait. They hang out near rock piles so its an easy, inshore fishing. The 1.5 hours is so that I am in open water rather than Long Island Sound. I've kept my boat at the office in Stamford but the fishing in that part of the sound is terrible compared to Mystic & Rhode Island. So we do what we have to do.

Plenty of Black Fish today at the bottom of Mystic River just south of Ram Island. Unfortunately, nearly all of them were 14" and keepers need to be 16". Plenty of action but only two keepers today - largest being 19" - not a monster but good filets. Despite being in-shore, the winds were against the seas and stacked waves to 3 footers. Still an enjoyable day.
As for cooking - that's my admiral's job. I just catch them and eat 'em however she prepares them. Usually pan fried or baked.
