Made my first trip day time sword fishing yesterday with my buddy Todd on his Yellowfin. We have been planning, studying, and preparing for this for 2 years. Ran out and pulled lures for wahoo for an hour and half with no luck, then moved south to 1700 feet and set up. We had the bait down an hour, and we decided to reel up and move to reset the drift. After reeling up a couple hundred feet, we stopped it for ten to fifteen seconds to see if anything followed it up. Sure enough, we see a twitch in the rod. We played with it for a minute before hooking up. Todd was on the reel and I was on the gaff. The fish swam up and jumped like a marlin and put on quite a show. Got it boat side and I stuck it. First time out and first drop. Can't beat that.

Great job, congrats. Ive never tried for swords, but plan on doing it next year. How was the current and how much weight did you use? I also went wahoo fishing a few days ago and recorded my first offshore skunk. Figured with the full moon the bite might be on but I guess it’s still a little early. Trolled for three hrs and nada, oh well.

I know how you feel, there is something different about catching a billfish. Any plans on preserving the bill and maybe making it into a walking cane? Not suggesting that you need one...
