The 2660 I recently purchased with twin 150s had both Balancers replaced in March 2018. I have the receipts from the previous owner. Unfortunately I hear a whining noise on my starboard engine!! If these are the newest version of balancer, should I be worried?

Noise could be your driveshaft coming out ofntheblower unit. Tends to make that noise when isn’t as well greased. I had my balancers done as well, and get a noise from the driveshaft when its been close to two years since I’ve pulled my lower unit for waterpump service etc.
Fishin Fool sid a real nice tutorial on how to remove lower unit and change water pump a few years ago. If yours need done, drop the lower unit snd put some WR Grease on that driveshaft and see if it fixes it.

This definitely sounds like the harmonic balancer noise I’ve seen in a few you tube videos!! Planning a trip to the Bahamas in July. I don’t want to lose my power head, but I also don’t want to replace a brand new balancer!! Anybody know a way to check it? Thanks

Milk, I think the latest version is the fourth one that has a little oiler nozzle above the gears. Go old school and use a piece of wood like a broom handle or something and listen to it like a stethoscope. That should tell you.

You didnt say when the balancers were replaced? Since there are several versions of the balancer that have come out, the timing of the replacement will be a good indicator. There should be a part number on your receipt too, each iteration of the balancer has it's own part designation.

May be worth revisiting with the Mechanic that did them if you’re confident its the balancers. Yamaha should stand behind them if it is. Yamaha has clearly not figured out the balancer issue given the number of iterations. Reports of some people even running without them as well.

I'll be replacing the HB on my 04/11 build date F 150's this winter. I've research build dates and the last updated version of the balancer is part # 63P-11500-04-00. If you check back it looks like the versions began with -00 then -01, -02, -03, and then -04. It looks like the -04-00 version came out between '12 and '13. Referring to Yamaha's parts system it looks like the -03 and -04 have the vertical oil spray tube. Someone please correct me, but I don't think the model number is stamped anywhere on the part, so there isn't any way to identify the difference between -03 and -04 versions because they both have the vertical tube. Your receipts and contacting the mechanic and dealer who sold the parts may give you an answer. I would expect Yamaha may stand behind the part if it was replaced in 2018.

The premature gear shredding problem with the balancer was corrected from, I believe, the 2007 model F150 onward. With the material change, you should have confidence in getting a full 1k+ hour lifespan. I think the manual says 'inspect' the balancer at the 1k hr service interval, not 'replace', indicating it should last substantially longer. My original (late 2004 mfg) balancer made a whining noise for several years. I removed it out of fear as I neared 1k hrs, just after a friend's F150 (with about 1400 hrs) suffered a shredded balancer and destroyed the power head. (particles clogged the oil passages) My engine ran fine and whine-free without the balancer gears, but there was a very noticeable annoying vibration below 1800 RPM. Eventually I replaced the entire balancer unit with the updated version in 2016. No issues since.
So, even with a whining noise, you should be fine with the new version balancers for quite a long time. Of course, it doesn't hurt to revisit the mechanic if you think something may be wrong.

Did you check your receipt and part number?

I Read on another forum that there is a number casted into the balancer that indicates the version. My starboard engine is an 02, and the port engine is an 03. From what I understand the latest version is an 04. So I guess the previous owner payed for nothing!! Now im questioning all the other work that was done?

As fishnfool points out, the above Yamaha part # is the latest and improved 4th generation version of the 150 balancer. Are you saying your engines are 2002 and 2003 build dates? The above part # ending in -04-00 didn't come out until the 2012/2013 year built 150's, not 2004. Its the replacement for all model year 150's with HB problems. Give the folks at Sim Yamaha a call, they have the low down on the harmonic balancers and are very helpful in sorting out model and part numbers.

I agree with gpm414 that balancer should not have that whine noise. I would take it back to who did the work or call Andy at Sim Yamaha for recommendations. gatorman-
