Spend a few days in January fishing around Marathon with a buddy of mine. Thursday spend the day trolling but lots of weeds between 100' & 300' and it was too sporty to go further. Spend some time in the afternoon reef fishing but lots of small fish. Friday was a better day and decided we do some deep dropping after catching weeds only when trolling. Had a triple hookup with yellow edge groupers. Really was afraid that my brand new rod was going to break.

Very nice. We are going to try deep dropping when we go in June. Any hints to where to start would be appreciated (depths, general direction, numbers lol).

Start drifting at around 400'~ 500' due south from Duck key. Its a muddy bottom and make sure you use a light. Also will need at least 4 to 6 lb weight to keep it straight down.
Report back please.

Will do. I have been looking at maps of bottom. I think I have a game plan. Thanks for the tip on weight size. Here in the gulf, we use 3 lbs out to about 1000 feet then move up to 5 lbs.

4 to 6 lbs. yikes!! I guess it was a little sporty. I like the days I can use 16oz in 300-400 feet. I love fishing in The Keys. 2 more weeks for me. Rag’s Attachments:
