Lately whenever there has been a weather window either work or personal stuff would get in the way of fishing. Last week the weather was looking good for Friday and Saturday. I already had a previous commitment for Saturday so once again personal stuff gets in the way. Thursday afternoon i said screw it and decided to take the day off and fish Friday. Tried to find some one to go with but had no luck. Seems like most of my fishing buddies are spoiled with bigger boats and no one wanted to fish on the small boat. Oh well, a solo day it would be. Made a couple calls and lined up to meet a buddy in the morning to pick up some livebait. My plan was to run around for a few hours to find some dolphin as i make my way south. About midday i would shift to bottom fishing and try to find a mutton followed by a quick snorkel for some lobster before the season closes.
Headed out of blackpoint around 6:30am.
Had livebait by 7:00am and was headed for deep water. After about 15mins of running around i spotted a single bird off in the distance with the binoculars. Headed that way but never found the bird. It did lead me to some floating debri. A few pieces of styrofoam with some line and branches, looked really promising. I pulled up to it and started to get situated. Immediately i get surrounded by little jacks and some small triple tails. As im rigging i see a large dolphin swimming around with the jacks. He was big enough to get the sense of urgency. I quickly pitched a live bait out but it gets swarmed by the jacks. I try this 3 or 4 times and get the same result. Luckily the dolphin was sticking around. I start throwing a bucktail jig and still cant avoid the jacks. I get a net full of live bait and throw it off to the port side then i pitch one hooked live bait off starboard. Luckily the dolphin sees the starboard bait and i get tight. After a few minutes of an uneventful fight i stick a gaff in him and put him in the fishbox. Forgot to weigh him but was probably mid 20's.
Surprisingly there were no other dolphin around. As i drifted off the debri while i cleaned up i watched 3 or 4 other large CC's work the debri with no luck. It was nice to know i made it there just in time. For the next couple hours i didn't find anymore debri, weeds or birds. Switched to bottom fishing around 12:30. I dont do alot of bottom fishing so i spent some time looking for a few areas to fish and experimented with anchoring techniques to end up in the right spot. Once i finally started fishing i hooked up to a decent mutton after about half an hour. Decided to head in for some lobster since it was getting late in the day. Visibility was great but everything i found was shorts. Overall a successful day.
