Another Sailfish (320) went south towards the Carolina line and came up empty trolling, but did manage a Swordfish while bottom fishing. I headed to Norfolk Canyon knowing I was still hundreds of miles from the Gulf Stream and the water temp got cooler when I got to the canyon. Figured on not much happening and the few other boats near us didn't catch anything while we were there and they left shortly after we arrived. I trolled south, nothing. Then east, west and back to the start of the canyon. As I got just outside of the canyon, we nailed two good size Mahi and had 3 knock downs. Ran back several times, but no more hits. We'll be eating Mahi tonight. Good trip with waves less than a foot and fish in the box.

Several people down Hatteras way have been getting hooked up with Tuna, but sharks taking their fish before they can land them. Rumor is the sharks are hanging around and just waiting for a hook up so they get an easy meal. If you go fishing, hope you have good luck on your side.

Usually by the time we get down to Ocracoke (last couple of weeks in July) the YF and gaffers have pushed north. Scattered blackfin can still be had, and bailer dolphin, but the wahoo start showing up good by then and the white and sail bite can be real good. The cobia start showing up in the sound too. We also like to get out and jig the nearshore reefs for AJ's and do some bottom fishing for BSB etc. I am just happy if the winds cooperate for just 1 day over a 2 week period so that I can manage to get out. Otherwise, I take the kids fishing in the sound.

Have fun at Ocracoke. I used to rent a cottage at Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head every year and bring all the kids and grandkids down for the week. Grandkids are growing up and getting them all there at the same time became a problem so we haven't been in a couple of years. Hoping I can get something scheduled next summer, but in the mean time I've been taking the local grandkids out in the boat and my grandson from Texas is due up here in a week. So we'll enjoy the beaches, boating and fishing here in Virginia Beach this year. Guess we'll both be looking for some good weather.
