We stayed at a friends house for the 4th. The one day we got on the water to fish it was sloppy as heck so we had to stay nearshore in the bay (boy gets sea sick)
Nothing fancy but some good memories.
We had a school of spadefish off our stern that kept taunting him, he gets this idea he’s gonna be Santiago, and hand-line the great fish.
He grabbed a length of leader line and a hook and for 20 minutes fed those spadefish shrimp bits, finally he hooks one. And the fight was on. He hand-lined it like a pro. I wish I had it on video, his determination was fierce. Finally he lands it and hoots and hollers like it was 3 days fishing for a marlin lol
He’s still wearing the cuts on his fingers like a badge of honor. Shows me every morning while he retells the tale.
He caught a jack on a top water which is always a blast
He caught a juvenile jewfish(a first) off our dock when we got back (I’m still torn on whether it’s a jewfish or gag or some hybrid)
And a sandperch (another first)
He was so damn giddy with this fish, damn kid never ceases to amaze me with how happy he gets over things I often see as simple. Perhaps the student is reminding the master of what’s important ....
Love it. I've got a good spadefish story. I was about his age and we lived in Wrightsville Beach, NC at the time and my mom took me fishing on Johnny Mercer's fishing pier. We caught one about that size and took it home and I cleaned it and we had spadefish for dinner. Can't say I remember much about the taste but I sure was proud of bringing home dinner that day. I still have great memories, as I'm sure he will.
