I did a lot of reading before deciding on the radar. I know the Fantom has some drawbacks, but it's advantages are what I was looking for. Love that I can tell if a a boat is approaching or heading away and seeing so much more than the chartplotter maps show. Anyway, we were on the beach and getting ready to leave when a thunderstorm started. Picked it up and tracked it on the radar. The storm started around Little Creek harbor, which is where we were headed, so it was nice to be able to watch it leave from a safe distance. The radar picked up the storm over 8 miles away and it probably will see one quite a bit further away, however we were only about 8 miles from port when the storm formed.

It's always nice when technology keeps you safe! Cool picture too!

I have not figured out how to see storms. What are your settings? I have the 18".

The 18" should perform similar to the 24", just not as detailed. Basically, I adjusted per the documentation so I see small and large boats when I've set it to a close up view and large boats when set to a larger view. By setting up that way, it sees the storms, bird flocks, etc. I can see bridges, pound nets, etc when viewing close up. Using a larger view I can still see bridges, ships and large storms, but no longer see small vessels and pound nets.
Really like the radar and the more I use it the more I'd feel comfortable using it at night, or in fog. Since we're heading toward fall, I'm really glad I've had time to get to know it before I start depending on it during the fall and winter.
Good luck

Well that explains it. I didn't get any documentation. I didn't even know there was any. I have settings on the unit but nothing the tsays storms. I do have AUTO BIRDS. High and LOW.

Believe it or not...the radar instructions are in the chartplotter manual. They are what you need to start with. After you go through those you can modify it more to your own liking. I set mine up that way and have adjusted the gain occasionally when I want to see more or less on the screen.
