Has anyone tried this method in the NJ area? It is intriguing, but I'm not sure how shallow this technique works. I see people fishing deep, but I'm wondering about the results at 80 feet...30 feet....10 feet? Would the jig present the same in shallower water? And what size jigs would work for shallower water? I'm not sure I want to invest a ton into the style, but I figure I can use my existing reels on something like a Talavera Slow J Casting rod.

I can’t help with NJ but I do a ton of jigging in Gulf of Mexico. I jig from 40 foot out to 400 feet. I will say you need different weights for the different depths. High speed reels with a dedicated jigging rod helps too.

Thanks! That helps. I have heard 1 gram per foot as a starting point, but I guess I just need to experiment. I didn't want to invest a ton in a rod and a set of jigs if I wasn't going to be deep enough. I can certainly find 40 foot to try it out. I ask because a lot of the articles I've read were over 250 feet. I have a Seigler SGN with 6:1 gear ratio, and I can move that onto a new rod to try it out.

That would work. The flat fall jigs are nice to start with. They don’t require as muck jigging to make them productive.

Great. Thanks. The boat is wrapped up right now. In the meantime, I'm going to watch some videos and look for some new gear.

What species are you going after? (I know nothing about jigging, but I bought into two jigging setups for Tuna and am planning on working them out this year).

My plan was to bring it out on all my trips, and use it for fluke, blues and striper at first. I want to get it on my boat and in the water to get familiar with it. My brother in law has a fishing club and is always asking if I want to go along on charters. So, after I get some experience, I'll probably take it offshore with them and see what I can get.

Yup that all sounds good. I fish Fluke and Stripers all (respective) season long. I usually jig for fluke (simple bucktails and bait) and troll for stripers. Just started going offshore late last summer (two trips). Once skunked, once with Mahi and false albacore.
Where are you out of - I'm in Red Bank....

I'm a bit south in the Manahawkin (LBI) area. We did ok with fluke (bucktails), but, while it was in the plans, I didn't really go out for striper much this year. I'm just starting to go outside more too.

I've had great luck using them from 3oz for seabass, bass bluefish up to 11oz offshore tuna fishing.
