As a new boat owner this whole discussion of the head and holding tank FREAKs me out. So naturally I have a few questions. - After getting holding tank pumped out what do I do? Do I flush again to add water to the tank, add deodorizer? What exactly should I do?
- My marina will pump out tanks once a week even if I am not there. So if this is the case, does this change anything?
- What do I do to lubricant seals, values etc. And how often and what does this entail?
- Do I need to fill the tank with fresh water every now and then and should I put some cleaner when I do this? If so, how often?
- Winterizing, what do I do?
Sorry for these questions, just trying to understand what are the best practices.

Well, I’m no expert but this is what I do. I generally only have to get pumped out once at end of year, generally only one user in my group! When I do get pumped out, I do run a freshwater hose to head and flush/rinse it all through, then pump out again.
For winterizing, I pump a gallon of the pink marine/RV stuff through the fresh water tank into a bucket, then I flush it through head and leave it in holding tank over winter.
Spring commissioning is one of those little bottles of blue odor killer stuff, think it’s like 8oz.

I agree with abouttime2fish. Since the head uses fresh water it doesn't need much other than anti-freeze over the winter here.

There is a product for lubrication of seals that I use two or three times a year. I got it at west marine. Mine uses salt water, so I run half a bottle of the blue Oder killer after every pump out.

So a few more questions: - So when you use the lubricant - you just flush it down the head and just leave it in holding tank till next pump out?
- After the pump out do you flush a few times to just add in a little water to holding tank and then add in half bottle of odor killer? After adding it in, I assume you leave to next pump out?

Feel for you outtadblue. My Albemarle used saltwater and seemed to always have odor no matter what I did, especially in rough water. gilm, you'll have to get the answer from outtadblue on the lubricant. I haven't ever used any (maybe I should).
As to your second question - yes.

Yes and yes. I leave it in. I will add some smell good stuff as needed between pump outs. I will use fresh water to flush it down.
