I am looking at purchasing a Sailfish 270 center console. It does not have any electronics installed. Will a transom mount side scan work with twin 150's or do I need to have the dealer install thru hull transducer? Thanks for any advice,Rob

I'm sure there are some with more experience than I have, but some suggestions. If you go with the transom mount, ride in the boat and look for fairly clear water at a spot on the transom for transducer placement. I'd do it at multiple speeds to get the best clear water spot. Then mount some starboard where you found the clear water with enough room to move the transducer around and not low enough to disturb the water, but as low as you can safely get it. The starboard will allow you to drill mounting holes without going into the hull when installing, or remounting the transducer. I've had to move mine after initial placement and the starboard saves you from multiple holes in the hull.
Unless you're really lucky, you'll lose bottom at cruising speed and above with a transom mount. I had a friend that placed his transducer below the hull and made a pvc spray deflector to keep spray off the aft passengers and he claimed he could see bottom at WOT, but normal transducer placement won't see bottom at speed.
I love my thru hull and being able to see what's below the boat at speed. I guess it depends on your planned use. With the transom transducer I had to run out to the planned fishing area without seeing anything, then slow down when I got there so I could see bottom. If it didn't look good, speed up and run a bit, slow down again to look. Now I just continue going with the thru hull until I find what I want to see, then drop lines.

I have a TM GT52 with down vu and side scan. Mount the ducer low and as close to the center line as possible i.e. near or just above the drain plug.

My old Sailfish 236 had a transom mounted side scan and my new 2660 has a thru hull transducer. If I had a choice on a new boat I would go with the thru hull. A little more expensive but worth every penny. You also don't have to worry about the transducer being damanged......My buddy had a transom mounted one and his daughter stepped on it and broke it off while at the sandbar. Good luck with the process.

My boat now is a 218 single motor and I have a transom mount with traditional, down view and side scan.It reads bottom at all speeds and functions great except I don't think I read side scan on the motor side. With the thru hull does the side scan read both sides with the dead rise of the hull? Thanks for all the suggestions, Rob

I started with a transom mount simrad total scan and like others said it only consistently worked when off plane. I added a B150M thru hull this fall and it does pretty well most of the time at cruise speed of 30-32mph unless it’s really choppy. I like running both when I’m bottom fishing, one on each screen.
If you’re only doing one I would go with the thru hull.
