Model HX 870,,,,, OMG this frigging unit does everything except, we won't go there. Can anyone simplify some basic usage of this unit particularly how to use the Marine phone option. Electronics is not my forte and this manual is overwhelming.

I've had one for about 5 years now and never tried the Marine Phone option. You're right it is a very good VHF and I used it for my primary VHF on my small boat and now it's in my ditch bag for the Sailfish. It is great for marine forecast warnings as well. Can't miss the alarm when they go off.

I have one in my ditch bag. Never knew that it had a "Marine phone" option. What exactly is a Marine Phone option? I read the website and it does not mention anything as a phone.

There are certain channels that will connect you to a marine operator who can transfer your radio call to a landline I'm sure it's not cheap but for an emergency it's a great option

Mine also stays in the ditch bag but I thought this winter I will try to become more familiar with it in case I did need it someday

I use my text messaging via the Garmin inReach if I need to contact someone when offshore. VHF only goes so far and where I live the HX870 coverage is at best only a few miles more than cell phone coverage. I'm not sure the HX870 would could reach a Mobile Operator for a phone call that I couldn't reach from my cell phone.
My console VHF probably covers about twice the distance (or more) than the HX870 due to it's 25 watt transmit power and extra antenna height.
