I have twin Garmin 8212 units, Garmin AP, weather, sonar, and radar. All good equipment and like with all Garmin units, very intuitive. That said, if I were to buy all new equipment today I would give Simrad and Furino a strong look. Reason being, I have become fatigued by all of Garmins glitchy updates and the associated costs. Furthermore, Garmin is very proprietary in that you can only use Garmins substandard charts/map on their machines, whereas Simrad and the like, you can purchase much better, highly detailed 3rd party maps like Cmore maps etc. Dont get me wrong, Garmins have charts are fine, but if you the best contoured, high resolution, detail fishing charts Garmin falls way short. Here's an example of what's available to nonGarmin customers. www.cmormapping.com/sample-imagery?gclid=Cj0KCQiAv8PyBRDMARIsAFo4wK0GJ0CaPYWuw-M01m8uRKQLVfBK4yG-cVDXhWQfWMI8YBJq-lXWJ1caAluWEALw_wcBDid you look at the garmin G3 Vision maps? Just curious. I am getting them on my 8612xsv and hopefully they are as good as the picture on the web looks:) static.garmincdn.com/en/products/010-BLUG3-UL/g/HR-d38f94e3-7ec9-4ff2-b100-5d19bf2ed18e.jpg

The maps are nowhere close to what is available from 3rd party providers like Cmore, even with Garmins latest "map update" where they claim high res relief shaded maps but fall short on coverage areas and detail by comparison. The G3 is an improvement over G2 but the fact remains you cannot buy anything other than Garmin maps. It is what it is until if/when Garmin ever concedes to customer demand. They are the Apple of marine electronics.

The g3 maps are not as good as the third party maps for sure. Garmin has dropped the ball on their mapping, but their equipment is still the best in my opinion.

Boat test put out an an article on touch screens:
I think the writer expresses my opinion pretty well: Most seem to be designed to work fine when the boat is static but once you get a boat moving in waves out at sea just trying to operate the controls and get the subtle response that you want, whether it is the throttles or the touch screens, can become a challenge that manufacturers will need to address. Of course, the other solution is only to go to sea in calm conditions.

This is defiantly a personal preference, I have used Garmin for years, last year switched to the Simrad NSS EVO3 which has the touch and buttons option-- which is a VERY nice feature. However I like the Garmin sounder options and feel better. So going back to Garmin and selling the Simrad. I picked up a Couple 942xs, West Marine has a good sale that lasts until tomorrow on a bunch of units. Also have Garmin radar, also another reason to go back to Garmin. That all being said, if starting fresh, I would look real hard at furuno- great products all around!
For transducers all depends on your depths. Last year I added the B175 HW, it is very good at marking bait in the entire column up to 450 ( that's as deep as I fish). I fish for bait and bass in shallow water (under 180) and its great. I also fish for ground fish up to 400 and am able to mark cod, cusk, haddock redfish. In the depths I fish I will always have the 175HW. Able to mark fish in all depths on plane and love it.
