As a new boat owner, I filled up my fresh water tank for the first time today. It never seemed to fill up, but at some point water was pouring out of a port of the side of a boat (like a bilge pump). Is it possible that this a fresh water tank vent and the tank is full when this happens?
Wanna make sure there is not something wrong - I was expecting the water level to come to the top of fill port when it was full but it never did just water coming out of that port on the side of the boat.

Yes. I believe there is an overflow outlet that drains into the bilge.

I have not had that happen, whenever I have filled mine, using the fill location near the swim platform, when it's full it just backs up and spurts out of the fill port. Yours could be different, or maybe I just never noticed it.

When I overfilled my fresh water tank it ran into the bilge. I was surprised that is where it would go and I had expected it to come out the fill. My understanding is they had to allow for expansion and allowed the excess to go to the bilge.
It's not a problem once I found that out. Since I winterize the tank each year I flush it several times at the beginning of the season before filling it and I'm bound to end up with some in the bilge. It's not a problem for me as I have it on a rack and leave the garboard drain plug out while getting the water set up.

Mine does not overflow into the bilge. I can’t speak for the newer boats.

So this what sailfish says about the fresh water tank on the 245
“Yes, the vent hose comes from the top of the tank and angles up. The overflow will go into the bottom of the boat and be pumped out by the bilge. Easiest way to tell it is full is when it starts backing up the water fill. Unfortunately there is no gauge.”
