I need to re-do the calking on my gunnel caps. What is the best way to remove the calking that is cracked, old, and hard? I tried with a razor, and it seems that would take FOREVER. I was thinking of using a dremel with a 1/8" router bit to remove it. Thoughts?

The Dremel would be a good idea if it doesn't clog up the bit I use the knife and it was a pain in the ass but I got it out

i did this in the spring but only removed areas where it was bad and left the well adhered existing seam alone. i used a plastic caulking removal tool. then i did 1 new bead over the voided areas and after it cured, a second bead over everything. i also used the boat life product. an alternative to taping is to make a spray bottle of water and a few drops of dish soap. lay down your bead, and mist the entire area. then form the bead wih your finger. I'm doing my rub rail now and its PITA to get all the old caulk out. I scoured it with a razor blade and used a pick and 5 in one painters tool to get most of it out.

Might be a dumb question but do you need the calk on them mine looks as if it never had any. I am sure it must but some one cleaned it out so well it is shiny and polished in the gap. Kind of makes me want to leave it that way unless it will cause troubles down the road. Rag’s

I redid mine a two or maybe three years ago now. Found a plastic caulk removal tool ar Home Depot that got most of it off. Using some plastic scrapers the rest csme off pretty well. Replaced with a mold and mildew resistant caulk, 3M maybe?? Still holding up well.
