Let’s hope they find he swam to shore. When alone I put on my inflatable pfd if rough or at night. Probably should do more often. But, I always have the MOB on so at least the boat will stop.

It looks like the boat was running under power when it went on shore...indicating the captain went overboard when under power. A lanyard kill switch (legally required for boats under 26' which this appears to be) would have stopped the boat and possibly allowed the captain to get on board again assuming he was conscious when he went overboard. An inflatable PFD would also help but we don't know if that was used or not. Sobering thought and those of us who go out alone from time to time should give some pause to ensure we do what we can to survive in case of the unexpected. Sadly, this is likely a body recovery operation at this point, and it might have been prevented.

Technically, the kill switch lanyard only needs to be worn while the boat is on plane. That being said…. I think I’ve gone through 3 auto-tethers (good idea, crappy execution), and last year installed an ACR guardian. Big fan. It also has a solo mode, when you phone is also linked in via the app/Bluetooth. In solo mode you pick how long it waits (mine is 5 min) before it sends a text message to the phone number of your choosing, with your MOB location. Obviously this only works within cell range.

I love the ACR concept, that should be standard equipment on boats rather than the lanyard. But like other devices like life jackets, it only works when it is used. I don't always use mine either and I should, even though my boat is exempt as it is longer than 26'. And you are correct that they only are needed when on plane, but looking at that boat on the beach it is pretty clear that it was moving along at a good clip and likely was on plane when the captain went overboard.
I checked on the news story and most of the search agencies have now suspended the searching for the 63 year old victim, Christopher Martin Young.

Thanks for the tip on the Guardian. Way back when the auto-tether first came out I almost pulled the trigger, glad i didn't now. Nice see a long standing reputable company like ACR stepping in with an offering. How difficult was the install?

It’s not hard. One hole in the dash about the size of a quarter. I think I have a thread on here somewhere with the install. Not sure if pics are still there.

I put 2 pics in, I have more if someone needs them. But if you can do a butt splice connection, you can wire in either the fell or the ACR. And if you only have a single engine it becomes super easy.
Also, you can download the ACR OLAS app and poke around and see features.
The only negative I have on the ACR. The little LED on the FOBs and the led backlight on the round control switch, are dim and difficult to see. Real pita when thee member of flashes is how many FOBs are hooked up and you’re trying to count but can’t really see…. the app makes that all unnecessary. I can see everything in the system. You can even just use the FOBs and the app as a distance/water alarm on the kids at the beach. You know, when you tell them to stay out of the water after lunch and you’re just resting your eyes for a minute….
