Has anyone replaced the magnetic latch on their transom door with an alternative replacement? I’ve gone through 2 in 4 years and they seem terrible frankly. I’m looking for something like a lever or rotating latch or even a slide I can lock in place. Thoughts? Thank you. I have a sailfish 218. This looks like original www.boatoutfitters.com/magnetic-transom-door-latch

On a prior boat I installed a screwed in strap to the gunnel and a mating snap on the door to hold it into the open position. I am considering doing the same thing for my Sailfish because I just want something simple to keep the door open as the latch to close it works fine for that. Unfortunately I can't find my snap tool so until I do that project is a bit delayed because I can't easily attach the snap to the strap material until I can find that tool. If you don't have a tool you can do it with a hammer and punch, but sooner or later I'll find my tool and get to work on that as well as another snap repair from a cover.

I put one friction hinge on my transom door to keep it from banging while the kids are swimming. I got two, of course, but that would have been too much and one worked out just fine. It stays open in waves and no longer bangs around.

Another good idea. Thanks.

The magnet fell off a few years ago on my 218 latch but I was able to blindly feel around in the rear port bilge with a magnetic retrieval tool and find it. I epoxied it back on and it's held up for some years now. I did take the latch apart this past year and cleaned and lubricated it, and it works fine now.

What hinge did you get? Did the holes line up? There are so many choices at Gemlux...

Hopefully they'll have them available soon. It's such an improvement over the original. Like I said, I had planned to change both, but one was sufficient to hold the door where ever I put it.

Thanks! I am not in a rush and it will be a great improvement. If you still have the other one, I would buy it from you if you are interested in selling.

I just took a piece of a plastic cutting board I had lying around the same thickness as the bolt/latch and shaped it with a dremel tool and made a new one. Made the grove for the spring. No magnet no rus.t No need for the magnet.
