So I want to use a separate float switch. Can it be wired direct to the battery with out an on / off switch. The wiring I've seen on these floats all show a switch.

On the factory installed bilge pump it was wired directly to the battery. The stern pumps are the ones that are on the console switches.
My 266 had the mid-ships bilge pump and wired as mentioned above. While I never had a problem with that pump or switch it was always a concern in the back of my mind that if it failed in the ON position that there was no quick way to shut it off.

So are you saying you would recommend an on / off switch.

No, it was an unwarranted concern on my part. My 266 collected water in the stern, so in all the years that I owned it I never saw the midship bilge pump turn on. But as a back-up to the stern bilge pump you don't want to put yourself in the situation where forgetting to turn the pump on causes you problems. My dock mate was a 236 and on that boat the midship bilge pump was the one that always came on first. The bilge water collected up closer to the bow whereas my 266 the water collected at the back. So in this situation where the midship pump is more critical I would not put it on a switch.
I guess this has popped up in my mind too is because it was a frequent question on the other forum. You'll remember I'm sure the number of questions over the years from newcomers to the forum asking about not being able to locate a switch for the midship bilge pump, there wasn't one.

Yes my 236 the water collects mid ship. But working on a pump you can only see with a mirror though an 8” cut out has been enough for me to leave it broken. Rag’s

Not sure of the year of your boat but I know SF changed the operation of some of the pumps. Both my mid and aft pump are hot wired to the batteries plus there is a consol rocker switch to operate either pump. Downside they use the pumps with the internal float switch and I have had to replace the forward one after 6 months. Mine only seems to collect water mid ships from the the floor locker, seat lip drains and some of the cup holders.
