My neighbor (he's an older guy) who bought a new 23 Robalo in 2020, who also keeps his boat 2 slips down from mine pulled into his slip yesterday and began to explain how he tried to help someone by pulling a stuck 30' sailboat off a shoal.
So he tied a rope off to his factory install ski pylon which is through bolted to the transom splashwell area.. In the process of trying to pull the sailboat off, which he was unsuccessful in doing, the bolts holding right front leg of the ski pylon had pulled up along with the leg.
He's not very boat savvy so I helped him inspect the damage. We took a look in his bilge at where the bolts were coming in. I was expecting that the bolts and nuts and what not broke through the fiberglass. To my surprise that didnt seem to be the case. In fact there were no nuts at all on any of the 3 bolts holding this leg down. Upon further examination only one leg out of 4 had nuts on the bolts, the other three legs the bolts were just screwed in (these are not fasteners). There was no backing plate or even fender washers on the one leg that did have nuts.
I told him the good news is there isn't any damage to the fiberglass/gelcoat and that its pretty simple repair to fix the bolts that pulled out and to rebed and get some fender washers and lock washers for each bolt. He didn't feel comfortable with that so he's going to try and get the dealer he bought it from to fix it out of warranty.
Anyway, I was just surprised to see how poor of a job Robalo did at affixing this ski pylon, forgetting the nuts on 3 out of 4 legs and without any sort of backing esp for a $90k boat. I thought they were a better builder than that.
