Took my wife, future daughter in law and 2 sons off shore Saturday... Was at Regal Sword this weekend off (Cape Cod). We started out trolling until every other boat around us seemed to have bent rods so we started jigging. 5 minutes later I was met wit the most aggressive fish I've ever experienced. My oldest son is 33 and he eventually took it to almost 4hours!!!!! This was a giant!! So we couldn't have legally kept it anyway due to being non-commercial and it was bigger than 73" For sure. SO after almost four hours of battling what was in my limited experience as a tuna slayer; this was a huge Tuna! It won the battle of man vs fish...It stripped our swivel clean and swam away. Nope...not a BS fish story here at all. This is the one that got away :-) We took a break for 15 minutes, had a quick sandwich and after that, we put two spreaders back out and bang!!! another 15 minutes later we had our dinner! 54" and around 80lbs.... What a summer!

Wow! sad to see the hardware all straightened out like that, especially after such a long battle. I'm sure you would like to have had a photo of it and some eyeballs for sizing estimates. But your consolation prize is nothing too bad either, what a fun day you must have had! Congrats!

Did you land a 54" Yellow fin or blue fin. There's a lot of giants this year. We had the same experience. A word to the wise next time you hook a giant after 15 or 20 minutes just cut the line. Set up again and hope for a more manageable size fish. Those fish are so powerful without a 130 reel you will never lift them. That excitement is so addictive. Great job captain getting your crew on fish.

Our reels are only 30's....and agree not enough for the big ones...

I hate you didn’t get the big one even though you couldn’t keep it. Nice job on the yellowfin.
