I'm trying to decide between a Ram 1500 and a GMC Sierra 1500. I looked at the Ram Big Horn and the GMC Pro. Between the two, the Big Horn stood out as the right choice for me. I would have driven it off the lot, but my current lease isn't up until January. I figured I should start early just in case inventory was an issue. Now, I'm sitting here thinking that going up a level in the trim package makes sense. I'm leaning away from the cloth seats due to the dog shedding and various other reasons. That's where the GMC is starting to edge ahead. I think the mid-level trim packages on the Sierra is where it really shines, and I'm starting to really like the GMC SLT interior. So, now I'm thinking I could end up with a GMC.
Towing capability shouldn't be a problem with either. I don't really NEED a pickup, but there are a number of times when I had to borrow my wife's full sized SUV to run errands. My boat stays on the water during the season, and will be stored at a marina, accessible by water, in the off-season. So, trailering isn't something that I would do often, but I will make sure to get an engine that can handle the Sailfish. During the week, I drive about 4 miles to work and 4 miles from work. I take my daughter to dance a few nights a week, which is much further at around 6 miles away. The truck would see most of it's action on the weekends. I'd also like to get out of the lease cycle and find a vehicle that I can drive until it won't any more. So, reliability would be a big thing for me.
This will be my first truck so I don't have years of brand loyalty built up.
Does anyone have experience with the Big Horn and how the seats hold up to dogs? I've thought about getting a seat cover for the back seat, but it's hard to give up that SLT interior....

I have a 2012 GMC Sierra SLT 1500. Tow rating is 10,500. V8. I bought it in 2019 with 55k mikes. Have 85k miles now. Leather Interior still looks almost new. I have two goldendoodles but only one of them sheds that are always with me on the weekends and after work. It’s been a great truck and has a quality interior that has withstood the rest of time for 10 years.

If you are considering the GMC SLT, look at the Silverado HighCountry. It has the same engine/trany and the interior materials are the same, except a slightly different design. The Silverado will run you about $10K less than the GMC, for equivalent features.

Thanks for the replies. The High Country looks very similar on the inside. I have time so I could run over to check them out. But, that GMC grill is beautiful...

I've always been a GM guy so take that for what it is up front. I owned a GMC 2500 diesel that was an amazing work truck...nothing fancy but towed like a dream and never did anything to it but oil changes. I have to hand it to the Mopar team for well thought out interiors, but long term reliability is my concern. Hear too many horror stories on Mopars that got a few miles on them.

That problematic cylinder shut down tech on the GMC turned me off from considering the 1500 Denali Ultimate. Plus the tow rating sucks. But I thought it the nic9ng looking 1/2 ton on the market.
Some say the Ram interiors are the nicest of the lot. I do like the new exterior styling. Had a difficult time spec'ing one out and getting the tow rating I wanted and the dealers I talked to were worthless.
Was also considering a new Tundra but hearing about to many bugs and QC issues with the model. Plus the dealers have been egregiously marking up the sticker.
So holding onto my 2013 Tundra with 139k miles for now, it's been bulletproof and tows my boat pretty well. Maybe I'll step up to a 3/4 ton when prices drop.

I have had all brands of trucks and can say I had the best luck out of gmc and Chevy. Many years ago when I managed an auto parts store I had a couple fellows arguing over which brand truck was the best and an old timer spoke up and said if it has tits or tires, they will all let you down.

I am going to look at the GMCs again. Hopefully I can find a time this week. I'm leaning towards the Sierra.

Just an update. I want with the Ram 1500 Limited. I like the way the Ram rode, but I was really drawn to the interior styling of the GMC. The Limited gives me the best of both. I pick it up today. I'll share my thoughts once I think them.
