The state of Virginia is going to have the largest offshore wind farm in the country. It will power up to 660,000 homes with 176 wind generators 27 miles offshore. I've been out there and the 2 constructed so far are impressive..but here's the latest from our local newspaper:
In its order, the commission also issued a warning about the impact the project will have on the electricity bills of Dominion’s captive electric utility customers.
“The magnitude of this project is so great that it will likely be the costliest project being undertaken by any regulated utility in the United States. And the electricity produced by this Project will be among the most expensive sources of power — on both a per kilowatt of firm capacity and a per megawatt-hour basis — in the entire United States,” the order said.
I'm just so excited it's happening here - NOT. So, Biden is forcing the cost of fossil fuel up, and now the green energy bandits are forcing it higher. Don't you just love it when the government steps in to help you?

On the upside, the structures will attract fish. Not that we'll be able to afford going out to catch them out there with gas power and our electric outboards won't have enough range to go out and come back in the same day...they will need a charging station installed under the windmill.

I was out there when they were building the first 2 and decided to drop lines coming back from offshore. They had marked the area with buoys and when I trolled near one of the buoys to see if I could snag something and their 65 foot maintenance boat headed toward me and intentionally ran across my lines and I lost several lures. They were doing it to everyone near the buoy area although I was at least a quarter mile from the structure.
They haven't had the maintenance boat out, nor the buoys in over a year, so maybe once they finish an area they'll open it back up. Have to see how they handle it. For sure if I see the buoys and maintenance boat I won't get near. Anyway I haven't heard any fishing reports from there since they've been up, but the Chesapeake Light Tower and triangle wrecks are about 10 miles closer to shore and they've been producing good. Fingers crossed that eventually it will be a productive area and they'll let us fish there. Of course with 174 more to build, it may be awhile.

Is there some regulation that requires you to keep a certain distance?
I'll tell you what, of some asshole in a maintenance boat intentionally went out of it's way to cut my lines and obviously operating his vessel in an unsafe manner I'd have a few choice words for him. I'd also film them in the act and report them to the Coasties.

I thought he was going to ram us, then he turned and went about 50-100 feet behind the boat. Since he's so high up he may not have seen the lines, but I agree coming within 50-100 feet of us at speed intentionally is unsafe boating. And, I saw him do the same to other boaters. Never got a call on VHF or heard him on loudspeaker.

Reminds me of an encounter I had once with an oblivious sailboater that was headed right at me nose to nose...I was trolling with planing boards out each side and this yahoo captain came so close that he got between me and my planer board (probably less that 30 feet off my starboard side). Of course the line broke and the board and lure went with the sailboat despite me waving and hollering off...just a few degrees of course altering would have made the difference, and I was unable to make the change myself because by the time he looked like we would hit I couldn't move left enough to keep him out of the arc made by the planer board. To this day I hope it wrapped around his drive and made a mess. The sailor looked at me like "what are you worried about, we didn't collide did we?"

Look at the size of this monster. Over 112 thousand acres.
I watched Lesner Bridge (over the Lynnhaven River) get replaced and reefs created from the old bridge and thought that was a pretty big project. This one dwarfs the Lesner bridge replacement. All I got to see what that little area marked in yellow. I think the buoys marked those 6 blocks closest to shore. The completed farm is going to be massive.

Just got to love it. They didn't say unplug your EV, but it's going to happen someday soon.
Dominion Energy and other utility companies are experiencing high demand on the electric system that will continue for the next few days. Customers are asked to reduce their energy usage over these next few days to help protect the stability of the electric system.
Customers can do several things to reduce their energy use:
Set thermostats to 68 degrees or lower. Turn off non-essential internal and external lights. Unplug non-essential appliances and devices. Limit the use of major power-consuming equipment such as dishwashers, washers and dryers. Ensure HVAC vents are open and unobstructed.

There may be a slight hiccup in these plans:
