From my extensive research, I have come to the conclusion that the correct formula to determine the number of fishing rods needed is X+1, where 'X' equals the number of rods already owned. Or at least it feels that way. I have started a nice collection, but I can't stop looking online.

Obvious errors in your math. It's more like (a + b + 2) x (c + d) = the minimim number of rods needed, which incidentally ALWAYS exceeds the number of rod holders you have no matter how many you have on your boat.
where: a=# of species you want to target b=# of "what if we want to try to catch X"... rods 2=# of the spare rods you need cause they break or you have overboard losses c=# of fishermen typically aboard d=a budget variable between 1 and 4 depending on how much you want to sacrifice things like clothing, car repairs, food and electricity to justify fishing because you eat some of what you catch and save a lot of money on food by doing so, or at least that's how you explain it to the Admiral

Damn, I'm behind then. Plus I need a bigger boat to fit all that gear. I like this place.

Your math might work, but mine is like this. Tuna at store = $10/pound Tuna caught = $100/pound
Explain to the Admiral, "I could lower the cost per pound if I had better equipment to catch more fish and my birthday is coming up soon and you know you like fresh caught tuna more than store bought".
And after my birthday.."I missed the two week run in June, but if I had more lines in the water for the September run I could really pull them in".
Followed by.."Christmas is coming up and I need more rod holders in the garage".
Anyway, it worked last year.
Oh, the boat issue. "Darling, I know your family is coming down this summer and our boat can't hold them all. I was looking to see what we might do and I found these three boats. You could pick one of these or any similar boat and then it wouldn't be an issue." ..... She picked the Sailfish.

X+1 back in the day I told my algebra that letters don't equal numbers. FYI, never enough fishing gear.

My Admiral didn't like to overnight on my 21' cuddy cabin. It had a porta potti and full canvas and to me it was more than enough to do a weekend. Heck, I took it across and around Lake Michigan for a two week vacation. But when she said she wanted a dedicated bathroom and two beds, what was I to do but put ol' trusty up for sale and buy another boat. We ended up trading in a deal on a 28' Carver express Cruiser that lasted us 17 years, many many fine hours of family fun as well as Lake MI salmon fishing. We only sold it because we knew we were heading down to FL and would be doing some very different boating down here, but sometimes I still miss that boat. Sometimes the Admirals have great ideas.

I'm looking to buy a dedicated popping rod for tuna. Then my tuna gear will be complete. 4 trolling, 2 jigging. 1 popping. Inshore rods = 25. I need a bigger boat.

Don't tell my wife that, I've been following the Xx3 per angler rule. The number of Anglers is an entirely different mythical formula that when properly factored into the first formula, can and will result in more rods than you can possibly store on your boat, garage and/or workshop and quite possibly even use.

I match my number of rods to my wife’s shoes and designer purses. Lucky for me she hasn’t raised an issue when I buy another rod rack to hang up new rods. And she’s gone with me for a couple of buys. Although I try to conceal the cash during the deal just so she doesn’t get too many ideas. I did have a funny backfire this past Christmas. She was trying to get me to buy a new Louis and we just happened to be in the garage as she was making her case and I was crying poor. She looked up at the rod rack and said, I bet if we sold four of these poles with shiny reels you could buy it for me. I said, ya well actually if I sold four we could buy two Louis and have enough money for dinner. Lol. Damn ya should have seen the expression on her face.

I match my number of rods to my wife’s shoes and designer purses.
According to generally accepted rod mathematics standards, as set by the anglers association convention of designer clothing to gear conversion, each shoe counts as one. None of this 'pair' BS.

I'm looking to buy a dedicated popping rod for tuna. Then my tuna gear will be complete. 4 trolling, 2 jigging. 1 popping. Inshore rods = 25. I need a bigger boat. Take a look at the OTI Tuna Sniper. I have 2 of their jigging rods, they are awesome blanks. www.tackledirect.com/ocean-tackle-international-tuna-sniper-popping-rods.htmlShimano Torres is rated for 65 to 200 lb braid that's what I'm looking at
