One of my rod holders on my 290CC has come loose for some reason. One of the screws can't be tighten anymore. The rodholder is the furthest away from the gunnel cover. Are they normally just screwed in without a backing plate? So I have to take the gunnel cover plate off to fix it ? I really don't want to do.
Any ideas?

My 2360 rodholders were 2 screws, 1 through bolt, no backing plate. I've fixed all but the midship gunnel ones, all through bolts with backing plates.

Is it a wood screw or bolt. If it's a screw you could try inserting a small cable tie through the hole and then put the screw in. The cable tie might give the screw enough bite to solve your problem.

Otherwise you could remove the screw inject some fiberglass epoxy into the hole, let cure and reinstall.

I just discovered a loose rod holder too and my brother in law gave me the same advice...all the T-Top bolts on his bay bolt were pulling out of the floor and he used some sort of injected epoxy to re-anchor them.

I've used the West System with a few short lengths of plastic coated wire leader, rock solid again.

I've had almost all of my rod holders come loose over the 12 years on my boat. What I found on my boat is that 1 screw is through bolted with a nylon insert nut on the back, while the other two are wood/sheet metal type screws. Its typically the latter screws that loosen up. If I was able to access it from underneath, I replaced all the screws with through bolts and placed a backing plate. You can buy a Gemlux backing plate that fits perfectly on our Sailfish rod holders. For the mid-ship rod holders, where there is no access from underneath, I made a custom backing plate, and placed three stainless steel rivet nuts on the backing plate. Then I epoxied the backing plate in.
