90% of my time on the boat is 100% fishing, but several times a year it’s family day, and yesterday my wife and my son’s girlfriend joined us for a leisurely day of sightseeing and fishing. So, we left our house at the late hour of 8:00 am (I trailer my boat 1 hour to Raritan Bay NJ) with the intent of whale watching and sea bass fishing and then lunch on the water. On the way out we threw the cast net, and it was one and overdone. Two of us could barely pull the net in, we gave buckets of fish to adjacent boats who had no luck with their 4’ nets, we threw many more buckets back.
With NYC in the background, we found our whales and it was the first time the two girls had seen whales in the ocean, lots of ohs and ahs. We headed to the sea bass and worked for ½ hour with several of our dozens of peanuts, to no avail, we put on small epoxy jigs and it was nonstop until we left and headed for lunch. I am certain part of the success was all the chum my son’s girlfriend contributed to the ocean. While anchored in the bay for lunch, we caught blue fish and stripers.
And that is why I spend far more time and money on boats then I should.

Sounds like a fantastic day. I enjoy a day excusion on the water with family with some fishing thrown in over any day over a hard core trip without.
