Kind of a weird question but what the heck. If I wanted to invest in a single spare prop in case I damage one but have dual engines that are counterrotating, has anyone tried to run a right hand prop on their left hand turning engine, or vice versa? I realize to make it work I'd have to drive one engine in forward and one in reverse, but in a temporary or semi-emergency situation I've often wondered if it would work to get back home rather than just running on one engine. And I'd save the $, weight and space with only carrying one spare, and presumably have a 50/50 chance that the spare I carry would fix the one engine that damaged its prop. It also assumes that if I hit land to cause the damage I could get out on the shallows and swap props, but here in FL there is a lot of skinny water and aside from offshore use in the river and bays I could find shallow water quickly.

I’ve always figured my spare prop comes with another engine attached!
Seriously though, the one time I mangled props, it took out both. Also took a chunk out of the skeg. It happened at the ramp, but I could have limped it home. Slowly. Probably very slowly, but it will depend on how much prop damage there is and how bad it vibrates.
I’ve not done it, but I’ve considered carrying a spare hub kit. Figure offshore a spin hub is a more likely scenario.

In Lake Michigan I did spin a hub once on a Merc Bravo II prop...but was able to idle home which luckily was only a mile or so away. I took the prop to a repair place and they had a tough time re-hubbing it. New hub slipped almost immediately, so FWIW I'd spare a prop not a hub kit.

Good point. Putting a hub kit in doesn’t look too difficult. No idea what kind of PITA getting the spun one out might be.

They often have to burn it out or so my prop guy told me at the time. And installing a new hub takes witchcraft, rare herbs, and more importantly a press that compresses and pushes the new hub home...and THAT I didnt have at home or on the boat, but I did have a spare prop😋
