I have a few set-ups like that, which I use as backup for quick rigging if I run out of already pre-rigged bait, but I have a wire anchor at the circle hook's eye. I also insert the hook further from the bait mouth, so the the hook's point comes out between the eyes and the wire anchor comes out closer to the tip. Then I wrap the band around the wire anchor. This way the hook is burrier deeper in the bait, and hard to be seen. Sometimes I also add a wire leader with a treble hook from the eye to the tail of the bait, and burry the hook near the tail.

In Massachusetts we have to use circle hooks while using live bait. I slow troll mackerel, pogies with circle hooks and they are quite effective especially in not gut hooking a fish so they help with catch and release/mortality rates.

That’s the way we rig our smaller live baits for marlin. We bump troll live bait. I like this method of rigging for trolling ballyhoo. May give it a try.

I’ve always used pin rigs and J hooks. Going out tomorrow to see if we can hook up some fish.
I’ve got 3 rods rigged with 40# mono tied to 30 feet of 50# floro, snelled to 9/0 circle hooks. One is neked, one with a sea witch and a couple beads, the 3rd with a flat faced islander and a couple beads for the flatline. Bringing some rigging wire too. Found a video inserting circles just like I do J hooks, but obviously no pin with the snelled hooks.
Another new try for tomorrow is a 6” drone spoon for the planer rod. Shotgun will pull un-baited lures of which I have plenty but never pull. Leaving all non tournament gear at home. Hopefully I’ll not just be burning gas… though there are worse ways to spend the day!

Good luck today.
I always see a drone spoon on board the charters out of Ocracoke.

Had one rigged per the video. Mahi hit it, short strike, nice drip back by my son and he came back and got tight.
The rest of the day we rigged the circles through the gill plate and out the belly. Used copper rigging wire attached to eye of hook. Best technique for wiring turned out to be run wire and leader under beak, push wire up through beak (there a soft spot in upper beak when you find it it is an ah-ha moment!), then wrap wire around beak and leader working back from spot you pushed through. Break back and beak off and go. Left eyes in. Didn’t have any chin weights so no need to remove.
Another interesting lesson. When there are no swivels anywhere, you better not have a spinning bait. It’ll wreck your leader and line faster than you can ask “does that bait look ok?” Um, no. Anyway we learned a lot, brought home 5 slingers, had 2 come unbuttoned.

Well, we hung in the money for a while. Weighed a mahi that was in first place for about an hour. Was still in 2nd when scales closed day one. Day two we got nothing. But that fish hung in there until 25 min before scales closed on day 2, with only 14 boats eligible to fish tomorrow. So third place will probably hold, but doesn’t pay. 1.5 lbs out of a $12k+ payout.
Crew is pretty quiet now, but probably good to not win money in first fishing tournament! It was a kids tournament and I was just hoping for a fish worthy of bringing to scales. So we got that. 11.8 lb Mahi, so just an average fish really.
Didn’t take the sailfish, we were on neighbors 29’ Robalo. 2360 would not have gotten out to the big rock today, we got beat up.

What would really raise fish is a bigger sailfish!

How was the Robalo? A buddy of mine has a 27 and loves it. Curious to hear another opinion on the build quality, handling of them.

The 29 has a 10 ft beam. Very stable. Very heavy. Very thirsty. Rode a 2860 years ago, I’d say comparable with better fuel efficiency, but I’m a lot of years removed from that trip.
