My radio asks me for an MMSI number each time I power on. I can bypass it by hitting the 'clear' button. As a BoatUS member, I can get a number for no cost. I don't think I'm 'required' to have a radio on board, but if I do have one, would I be 'required' to have an MMSI number? Does anyone know more about these?

Go ahead and get one. All it does is identify who is in trouble when you hit that distress red button on the radio. I think you can also list who to call.

Always good to be known when in distress. I'll probably register for one. Thanks.

It's so you can activate your DSC in the event of an emergency. Get it, oh and don't mess up the input cause I think you only get one chance. Is your radio tied to your plotter or does it have a built in GPS? When you activate the dsc it also sends your coordinates.

I'm not sure if it's linked to the plotter. I'll get it registered and then look to see if it's all linked.

Damn. Not linked. Well, I can’t solve all the world’s problems in one weekend. So it’ll have to wait. I did get the MMSI number entered into the radio, so it turns on with one push now.

What model radio do you have? I had to use NMEA 0183 to link mine, but it wasn't too hard. However, the VHF came with GPS built in so the DSC would also broadcast my location if I ever push it. I hooked up the NMEA to get AIS on the MFD.

I have an Icom. IC-M242G. I think there are NMEA 0183 in/out leads. Do the other vessels show up on the nav screen when connected?

If your vhf has an AIS receiver AND if your radio is connected via 0183 to your MFD.
Look up your VHFs features.

I can't locate anything about an ICOM IC-M242G. Chris is right..your best information will be in the manual.

The ‘G’ seems to indicate built in gps. Might it be a 424 vice 242?
