My steering completely froze up today. Feels like something in the steering box (gear box) broke. Anyone know how to remove the steering wheel?

You might want to join the forum, add boat and/or steering pump manufacturer.

Thanks Rich. I was a member of the original forum years ago :-) Joined this one now. I have a 2007 2660 CC with SeaStar steering. I figured out the center nut needs to be unscrewed...which took a lot but I got it off. Now I need to remove the steering wheel. I'll try some suggestions I've read but curious if anyone has done it and what to expect once it's off.

I'm interested in what you find in the process. I am about to add autopilot and the clearance to the hydralic lines behind the helm is very tight and to be honest I haven't yet figured out how I'm going to get in there. Your findings may be helpful as I mull over my options. Good luck with your repairs/replacement.

I removed my steering wheel trying to find a leak, but it was a uflex steering wheel/pump, so I'm not sure it's the same process. It fought hard not to come off, but I didn't have to get a wheel puller to remove it. Good luck

I recently did mine you need a gear puller to remove it. To install auto pilot the helm pump is very tight but hydraulic fittings can be installed without removing the helm pump.

Thanks everyone. I went by the same screen name in the old forum, VIP. Glad it was still available :-)
I was able to fix it for anyone that is interested. After removing the center nut, I tried pulling the steering wheel up but it wouldn't budge. I tried tapping it from underneath with a hammer (carefully) but that did nothing either. Finally by tapping the center threads (where the nut was screwed into) and pulling on the steering wheel, it slid off. The rubber boot lifted off easily and I removed 4 screws, 2 for the plastic housing and 2 bigger ones for the gear case itself.
The gear box was a mess. 1 screw was broken and 1 bent in half. These 2 screws 'sandwiched' the gear box to a metal bar that went into the hydraulic case behind the console. Thanks for all the help.
