My old boat had a Yamaha. New boat has a Mercury. One minor issue is access to the flush hose. The Yamaha was screwed onto the cowling so it was as easy as unscrewing it, and hooking up the hose. On the Merc, there is a plug that is inserted into the engine with the hose inside...which shouldn't be an issue, but the plug never wants to come loose. I have to sit on the transom and wiggle it for a few minutes until it finally comes out. I found this solution: www.partsvu.com/flush-m-mercury-outboard-flushing-solution-late-models-75-450hp.html It replaces the OEM plug and has a cap on top for easy access. Any reason not to use this? It seems like it would make me happy beyond my wildest dreams.

My friend has twin 300 Mercury's he bought them well spent $.. It's a poor design from the factory.

Thanks. I'm going to give it a try.

I just let mine hang loose than just unscrew the cap and attach the hose. No problems yet. Is a pain and poor design.

Hmm. Just let it hang out? That's a good solution too. I have the replacement to try out. If it doesn't work, I'll just let it hang. I'll report back.

I'm not familiar with the Merc design but on my Yammies I put in a couple of quick-connect hose adapters so flushing is faster and easier...and on the Yamaha design once you disconnect the flush hose you almost always push out the rubber hose gasket and loose it overboard so that too is a bad design. With the quick connects installed there is no more chance of lost gaskets so that alone is an improvement. Maybe a quick connect would help the Merc problems too?

The issue with the Merc is that the hose is screwed onto a plug, and that plug is then 'screwed' into the engine via a small hole. The plug is difficult to get out, especially since there isn't a lot of surface area to grip, and my hands are usually wet and slippery. There is a zip tie that attaches the plug to the hose so it doesn't fall in the water. But the zip tie also gets caught in the opening. The idea is sound, but not the execution. The replacement is a similiar idea...BUT...it also has a quick release cap, with a quick connect hose adapter.

Seems we are not alone. Here is a video I found on Youtube:

Put a dab of this on the rim of the cap.... "Corrosion Block High Performance Waterproof Grease" (Amazon @ $8.00).
No issue getting them "on or off" for us as the Admiral can manage it just fine on her own!
We rigged up a "y-valve" and two pieces of short 3' length hose. Flush both motors simultaneously with the on board fresh water tank or at dockside.

Since the hose isn’t outside of the cowling, but rather pushed in the hole, it gets a kink that restricts the flow. I can try to alter the hose, but I’ll try the grease first.

I was going to update this thread. I ended up using the Corrosion Block and it works very well. Thanks for the suggestion.
