My father bought my son a magnet fishing set for his birthday. Has anyone tried it? It's fun, but it makes a huge mess...not something I will be doing from the boat. But, it's cool to try it at the dock or at a sandbar. So far, we've found a few old bungees, a bunch of screws and nails and a shotgun shell. I will probably take it to a few bridges once I put the boat away for the season.

Timely topic! I just ordered a magnet on A-zon yesterday, it arrives on Saturday. I got fed up with nothing to retrieve the many things I've lost at the dock after a screw-in hook went over (before I could screw it into the dock) earlier this week. You think I could get it with a long handled net? Nope. So I got a magnet for $50 to retrieve a $2.84 lag hook that will be all rusty by the time I get it up.
But you all understand my economic prowess here I'm sure, since you all are boaters too. How can we put out tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars into a toy that depreciates faster than the cost to maintain it, all while thinking its a great investment? So maybe the next thing I can pull up will be a safe full of gold bars or something...or maybe I can use the magnet trolling for steelhead. Either way, I have a means to get back some lost stuff if it has steel in it. I wonder if it will pick up the airpod that went into the water at the dock last year?

Oh, a side comment as well...has anyone else experienced the strange phenomenon of a particularly strong pull of gravity on objects whenever you are at, and especially directly over, the water? I swear its 10x stronger than over land.

Think of the feeling of joy and pride when you pull up that screw hook that just fell in the water! You can't put a price on that. Not gold. Not nothing. I'd easily pay $52.84 for that victory, rust and all. Then anything after that is all profit. I may never have to buy a bungee again. Though, I'm not taking my chances with that shotgun shell we pulled up.

I've contemplated buying one and dragging it around under bridges and in lagoons picking it up every few minutes to see what I find. the reason I haven't is because i also see my garage, shed and every other spot becoming filled with junk I don't need but can't throw out, and swear, one day I'm gonna polish that up and it'll be good as new!

As far as magnets....not really in my future except possibly on rivers. Too many places around here marked as shipwrecks, possible mines or unexploded ordnance. Largest naval base, navy's main air base and years of gunnery practice at Dam Neck have made our waters a bit risky for some activities. I remember as a kid watching the guns at Dam Neck shooting at targets in the ocean at night. Guess not all of the shots exploded and I sure don't want to find them.

Tried it here in the coast. Fishing piers, boat ramps. A few rusty hooks and trailer parts. Too much stainless steel (not magnetic!) here. Freshwater locations are probably a better choice.

Success! My $50 magnet investment has paid off to find and retrieve my $2.84 hook! It also picked up 8 nasty old nails left in the water after my dock and lift were built. Just think of the money I saved by not having to go to the ER and get a tetanus booster after stepping on one of those bad boys some day in the future when I go under my boat lift to work on the boat bottom or do other such work. And, I cleaned up the environment a little bit. Nice! Attachments:

Haha. Perfect 'click bait' for a Youtube channel. I've watched a few videos of people magnet fishing near military bases and getting kicked out. Of course, the cover photo has text like: "We found some missles and almost got arrested!! MUST SEE!" I guess we'll leave those unexploded ordinances for someone else to find. I wouldn't touch it either.

Makes me nervous thinking about deploying an anchor in those waters! Hmmm, let's see...5:1 scope for light winds....that's about 100 feet of rode, 18, 19, 20, KABLAMMM!
