I'm looking to upgrade my older VHF. Looking for recommendations many to choose from. For offshore use with a good external speaker so I could hear other boaters while running. I don't think I need the ASI feature. Prices vary so much but all seem similar. I do know there's some good deals now, just don't have enough knowledge about them to choose.

I've got a Standard Horizon GX2200 that I'm happy with and it puts AIS info on the MFD. If I was getting a new radio I'd get the GX2400 as it is an improved version running NMEA 2K so it's much easier to connect up to the MFD. I haven't got external speaker, but it has capability for one, and for a hailer as well. They also have a new radio GX6000, but I don't know much about it, so can't recommend.

Hard to go wrong with Standard Horizon. The AIS receiver is in most of them it seems nowadays. It is nice added feature because other vessel's with a transmitter will pop on your plotter screen and radar, which just gives you one more set of eyes in low/no visibility situations. You can also see the vessel name, its bearing and speed which I found helpful when out fishing when i see a ship off in the distance when deciding if I need to move or not.

Thank you for that explanation of the AIS. I thought it was mostly for commercial vessels. I didn't known other vessels would show up on my plotter. That awesome another Is layer of safety. Thanks buddy

Little triangles will show up on your screen from miles out, if you touch your screen, the info on the vessel will come up. You can then choose to hail/call that vessel too.

I’m replacing this iCOM. I believe it’s an M504. It needs a new mic. I bought another iCOM M604 at a recent boat show. If interested I’d make a great deal. I’m in Vermont right now but returning to Florida next Wednesday. IM me if interested.

I have an ICON and Standard Horizon in my boat but I have installed a couple Garmins lately for some buddies. I like the newer Garmin VHF. I can tell you the Garmin external speakers are great with Garmin units but not worth a darn with other brands.

I have the ICOM M506 and been happy with it. I agree with AIS. If do any running in the dark or fog it is great. We have high speed ferries/whale boats running a lot who usually don't change course. Nice to know they are coming even if during the day since they move so fast.
