I agree it's very hard if not impossible to see in any sort of sunlight. The placement on my boat doesn't help...it is too low and too hard to see straight on. I haven't replaced it and probably never will, but I would much prefer a dial and needle for battery voltage with a clear light showing that it is charging. Instead I like to look at my MFD and use that to display voltages of both starter batteries and the house bank (data is ported over through Yamaha command link to NMEA2000 I believe). It doesn't show charging but that isn't then end of the world.
Let us know if you find a better monitor.

The first one only lasted a few years, but it shows charging voltage when running and voltage of 1 battery when not running. I just switch to the other battery when I want to check it.

I also added this and it is great to monitor at the dash, and adds some charging capability as well. I just replaced one of the existing 12v receptables, it was essentially plug and play.
