As I write this I am evacuated to Miami to get away from Milton's approach to the west coast of Florida. My home and the Sailfish are as prepared as I can make them, but after living through Ian two years ago I am nervous and if it's not us again, it's somebody somewhere nearby. Projections now look like the brunt of the hurricane will hit north of where I live, but that makes the wind-driven storm surge higher by us than those to the north of the eye. Stay safe everyone, and get out if you are in the path.

Stay safe, this storm looks scary. I hope people heeded the evacuation orders and ride it out like you are. My sister is in Englewood and her house took some really bad damage from Helene and this looks a lot worse.

When I hear "mandatory evacuation" I don't argue with the authorities. The Cape Coral area had at least 5 confirmed tornados around noon today just from one of the weather bands coming from the hurricane, and there was damage on the news from very close to where I live so I am definitely glad I didn't stay behind. I may look dumb, but that is just a look I like to project...

I can't even imagine how severe they're talking about. My worst hurricane here in Virginia Beach was right after I moved here as a kid. The pine cones woke me up. They sounded like shotgun shells going off when they hit the sliding glass doors. After it passed, one of the jobs my dad gave me was to remove the pine needles from the brick walls and leaves that were stuck under the eaves of the house. The river went up under our house and my next job was to dig a ditch under the house to drain the water to a hole my dad dug behind the house. ... And, I think it was a category 1 or maybe a 2 hurricane. I promise if VA Beach is ever predicted to get a 2 or higher, we're going somewhere else.
I feel for you and all the folks down there. Be safe and I hope and pray it weakens before landfall.

The Sailfish lived through another major hurricane! And so did our condo. But I have relatives just north of here that were not so lucky, with two different households sustaining severe damages to their homes. I am grateful for the solid concrete construction in my condo, and a combination of luck and, I like to think, solid hurricane prep for the boat. A neighbor that did not evacuate sent me this photo of my boat first thing this morning. What a gorgeous sight! Thoughts go out to those not so fortunate once again. It's been a wild few weeks down in FL between hurricanes Debbie, Helene, and now Milton. Attachments:

Glad you came out so well. Sorry for those that didn't. Anyway, let's hope that's it for this year.

Stay safe everyone, and get out if you are in the path. Glad to hear you and the sailfish are safe. Sorry about the news of friends and family. In Vero Beach we got nailed by tornadoes. 4 that were within 10 miles of my house. One claiming lives on Spanish Lakes. It was an F3 with 155 mph winds. I’ve been through every hurricane since 1994 in Vero but never experienced such violent tornado activity in such a short time. My friends on the beach experienced a direct hit from one. Myself and others have been helping their families pick up the pieces. My house was spared of any significant damage and mostly had tree limbs and debris to clean up. Attached is a video shot by our sheriff’s helicopter. Our community is rallying and will help those that experienced damage. Prayers to all and let’s hope Florida peeps can enjoy boat rides with family and fishing soon with our friends. Be safe everyone

We got power fully back yesterday afternoon (had one phase out since the storm) and overall the damages here were minimal compared to Ian. Got lucky. We too had lots of tornados. I was watching local news from my evacuation hotel as a rotation travelled right over my condo, only to drop down as a tornado about a mile further north, doing damage to a neighborhood I pass by regularly. I think they said over thirty tornados came out of Milton in Florida, the most the state has ever seen in one day. Thinking of those with damaged property, and especially those whose lost loved ones.

My sister's house in Englewood got absolutely hammered, 5 feet of water inside the house and someone's boat ended up in her front yard. Luckily, they heeded the warning and evacuated to Delray. I truly feel for the people affected, the one, two punch from these storms is horrible.

I truly feel for the people affected, the one, two punch from these storms is horrible. So sorry to hear that. I'm not that far away from there (about an hour drive) so if there is anything needed let me know. I know for the most part its saving what can be saved, cutting out drywall (funny they call it that when its flooded!) and any wet furnishings that can lead to a mold farm. Then rebuilding electrical, any structural damage, etc. which is usually by way of contractors. But if there is any immediate needs, food, water or other support that I can do, I will. Let me know.
