The boy and I were talking about fish and catching fish and eating fish He then asked me “what is the go to fish up north like along the east coast?”
For the most part when you ask a Floridian it’s pretty much grouper. Most of the menus across the state highlight Florida Grouper as the fish
So...what is it in other coastal states?

Depends... In our bay its Rockfish. Offshore from NC to OC MD tuna, mahi, wahoo, whites and sails. Bottom fish bsb, toug, flounder, grouper etc

I went to my favorite restaurant's website, Bubba's and this is what they have: Fresh Catch: Yellowfin Tuna - Mahi Mahi - Flounder - Sword Fish - Tautog - Red Snapper - Atlantic Salmon - Speckled Trout - Cobia - Rock Fish - Sheephead
Most are local at some part of the year. Hard to say which is most popular for our area and they leave out a few others that I like. Guess Virginia doesn't have one or even a couple of fish that are known as "Virginia's fish". I grew up eating lots of big yellow belly spots, channel bass and flounder as my 12 foot boat was too small for offshore. Back then Lynnhaven Oysters were what Virginia was known for and after many, many years without them, oysters are making a comeback around here and maybe we'll be known for them again.

Long Island Sound, Black Sea Bass, Fluke, Rock Fish, Porgy.

In NJ it's very seasonal, summer we get fluke, black sea bass, blowfish and occasionally weakfish, spring and fall we target striped bass, tog (blackfish) is more prevalent late fall. Also can find cod and ling.
