Boston Boat show in got the family going we are pumped for Rhode Island Fishing show in March!
Just starting to organize the todo list and the first one is the new Transducer.
Currently have a Transom mount is CV52HW-TM transducer that shipped with the Garmin (STRIKER™ Plus 7sv). I was surprised with the performance of the STRIKER™ Plus 7sv. I could accurately see fish at 300-350 feet on the bottom, and when I saw fish I was catching fish . My only issue with the unit is not being able to see bottom when on plane. I moved the transducer up/down on the right side of hull, but no luck, so going to install a thru-hull. Not a huge fan of the fin like design of the Garmin transducer, but no choice with the unit I have.
I am going to pick up the GT23M-TH (https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/530173.)
My question is, I was planning to install the transducer on left side of hull, opposite the high speed pick up which is on the right side. As we all know the bilge access is tough on these boats, but wanted to confirm the placement before I start digging in. The only other option would closer to the stern, near were the bilge, on the left. My concern there is the bilge access is terrible with via the 2 5 Inspection hatches.
thanks for any and all help! --
Kevin

Here's my B164. I've got some Awlgrip fairing compound around the edges to minimize water disturbance. Not sure how much good it does but I don't have a problem holding bottom at speed. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

Before buying a new one (though I do think thru Hull is better, and more power the better), try adjusting the angle of it. Push the furthest aft edge down about a 1/2 inch lower than level and see what happens. If that works lift it some, ie find the sweet spot of good return and minimal drag.

If you're really serious about marking bottom well, and especially if you want to do any sort of deep-dropping... do yourself a BIG favor and install a 1Kw B164 (or similar) thru-hull like KBH did. I also installed a B164 in my hull about a year ago, and was kicking myself for not doing it a long long time ago.

Perfect shot kbh -- that is exactly where I was thinking! Thank you abouttime2fish, I’m not sure what is going on, but so far have not been able to get a good signal at all when on plane, no matter what I do. I could try moving to the other side next, but going to get a thru hull. unclebuck
I have to say that I’ve know that the right thing to do is install an airmar 1KW unit, but have been kicking myself for getting the striker when I should have ripped the band aid off and done it right the 1st time. I’m worried about that fin design transducer by garmin. I trailer often enough where it might be an issue. Also was under a time crunch to get the unit delivered and installed in a couple days last year (excesses excuses ) To that end, I think I am going to switch gears and pick up the Airmar B175H with maybe 7607xsv. Have not decided on the head unit yet, but working on it. Thanks for the help, just needed a kick in the right direction! Will keep you posted and take some pics along the way.

What I did was drill a small hole through the hull from the bilge out. That gave me the the mark for the center of where it was going. I also was having trouble finding the right size hole saw so I just cut it out with a jig saw. It turned out fine and was actually quite easy to install.

No doubt a better set up. I went from a ray marine c80 with p66 transom mount transducer, to Simrad and a b175m. Whole new world.

Thanks for help!
Just ordered a NSS7 Evo3 and B175HW. Going to keep the Garmin 740S for the radar. Not sure what to do about the Striker sounder yet. might put up top box, mount on the Dash or ditch it. Will get some pics as I start the project.

I’m hoping to do this soon on my 218. Where did you pic up your new transducer?
