Does anyone have experience with Grundéns jackets? Is the front really waterproof?
I've gone through a few foul weather / rain jackets over the years. (Columbia, West Marine, etc.) All have claimed to be waterproof & dry. All have had zippered fronts with either a velcro or snap zipper guard weather flap thing that's supposed to keep water from entering the front. But, I always get the wet streak down my chest and belly.
I've been looking into Grundéns gear. Supposed to be the top shit, right? But I noticed that they have a snap closure with a snap weather flap thing, and also claim to be waterproof. How is that possible? There's nothing to seal it. Not even a zipper that pretends to seal it. Do Grundéns somehow seal the front in a way that other brands don't?
Grundéns used to have a pull-over jacket with no front closure at all. No opportunity for water to seep through the front. But, no longer shown on their website.

I cant imagine the thousdands of commercial fisherman that rely on Grudens working in the worst weather conditions would be satisfied if they were getting wet

I've been on a similar hunt. I'd like recommendations for a breathable rainsuit that isn't hot for summer rainstorms.

In my experience the breathable stuff always leaks. I have a set of breathable bass pro bibs and jacket that stay on the boat and are used for unexpected weather. If I know it’s going to be rough/wet I grab my Grundéns. I believe i have the Petrus style. They are the solid PVC but the lighter weight versions. These have the button up fronts like you mentioned. I was sceptical at first but the button flap does a really good job. Yes if you’re hunched over and that seam is wrinkled it will leak but overall it’s pretty good. I have sat in a bean bag chair for hours with spray and rain and had a puddle of water where i’m sitting and have stayed completely dry. With any of my breathable gear I would always have a wet butt.
IMO the Grundéns are well worth it.

Thanks Mikey. That's the kind of info I was hoping for.
ksoles... That 100mph Gore-Tex jacket looks awesome, but the $250 price tag is painful. It also looks like it would be a bit too hot for South Florida and the Bahamas. Probably better suited for cooler weather in the northen states.

Finally something I know about. I think I'm the only Sailfish owner on the NW Pacific coast, and I know about wind, rain, and big seas. So one thing I do know about is foul weather gear, and Grunden is tops here on the coast. Grunden has several lines of gear, both commercial and sports fishing outdoor gear. The commercial line is serious foul weather gear that is tough and built for working in the worst conditions from Alaska to Norway (watch any episode of Deadliest Catch). The Outdoor gear line is lighter weight and more comfortable, but still Grunden at heart. They also have a line of gear for women that my wife loves and has a couple jackets and pants. I think they still produce a line of pull over jackets like the Grunden Neptune 103 Anorak Pullover HiVis Yellow. Just do a goggle search..or www.wholesalemarine.com/grunden-neptune-103-anorak-pullover-hivis-yellow/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIleXm-orf4AIVZB6tBh17SQWtEAQYASABEgIcyfD_BwE Is it legal to put a link to a store? I'm retired so I don't work for Grunden or a marine store, but I don't tolerate getting a wet rear! And to answer uncle buck, most of their rain gear has a double front flap that keeps the rain out without a zipper.

Grundens are great, but definitely do not breathe. I am talking about the straight rubber slickers, not their snow suit type material. I also have a Stormr jacket that will absolutely keep you dry. Best to find it on sale because it can be pricey. You can never go wrong with the Petrus set from Grundens. Rinse them after every use, let em dry, and hang them in the console for a rainy day.
