The USCG and some fire departments will dispose of them, if you want to do it the less fun legal way.

4th of July fireworks!!! Or USCG. I didn’t know fire departments would dispose of them. I may check into that.

I called my fire department and they had no idea what to do with them and they knew of no disposal site. The person with the fire department told me to soak them in a bucket of water for a week and they throw them in the trash. Fortunately I found that our local landfill has a place where you can drop all hazardous materials from batteries, florescent light bulbs, engine oil and the like.

Not sure if it's a good idea or not, I leave them on board, as back up.

Not sure if it's a good idea or not, I leave them on board, as back up. I've done that too. I had some that were four or five years out of date and I thought I'd try lighting one since I had never done that before. This was an Olin flare. When I tried to strike the end, the ignitor on the end of the cap just disintegrated. I couldn't get it to produce a spark. Years of Florida heat and humidity took a toll. The material on the cap was soft and I could scrape it off with my thumbnail. On the bright side I can light a cigarette now without a lighter, just a flick of the thumb...

I had some so flare gun flares so old they had split. I was going to take all my old ones to the landfill hazardous disposal, but then found out my marina would dispose of them!
