I come to seek the guidance of those smarter than me. I am replacing my spreader lights and of course once I removed the old one the positive and negative wires are too short to connect to the butt connector. Can I splice new wire onto the old to extend the length? Oh and there are two positive and negative wires that need to be fed into the butt connector as I believe those are coming from the other spreader lights. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

Although not ideal, there is nothing wrong with splicing in a small pig-tail to connect your wires. Is there more risk for shorts, water intrusion, and corrosion? Yes. But I think your only other option now is to re-wire the main run all they way back to your terminal block or switch panel. So pick your poison. As far s splicing the double wires: You can usually go up one size for your splicing butt. For instance, if your spreader wires are 14G, you can double up those wires and use a 10-12G butt connector. On the other side, you can make a longer strip and double up the wire. Alternatively, there are specialty butt connectors out there that are 10-12g on one side and 14-16g on the other. They tend to be expensive... You can find them at www.pacergroup.net and newwiremarine.com.

Popeye has it right. I had to make a short pigtail for my forward spreader light. Of coarse it wasn’t working last time I checked the lights. The wire had pulled out of the butt connector. Poor job crimping it on my part. Easy fix though.

I just went through this project. Unded up soldering the connections directly. left the leads on the lights just long enough to slide on the short waterproof heat shrink and the longer black heat shring as a cover. solder connections and apply heat. Good to go.

I cam never get my Ancor butt connectors to shrink like that when I apply a torch to them. Seems like would burn up and catch fire before they shrunk down enough.
I like those solder butt connectors very cool.

Nice work! Those are on my wish list. Are they the white/blue? Yes, they are the white/blue LED's. They are powerful for such a little unit! Love the option of switching to blue light while out at night to preserve my night vision.
