Ok fellows, here’s the report. Me, my wife, daughter, and my buddy Todd and his wife left on Saturday morning the 8th at 4:00 am for Marathon. Made it to the house we rented around 7:30 pm. The trip was long but no problems.
Got up Sunday morning, fueled up boat and launched her. Took everyone out for a swim at a small island then headed to the house for lunch. After eating, me and my buddy went fishing. We found scattered grass everywhere. Hard to troll but we tried anyway. Caught 1 nice mahi but that was it.
Monday me and my wife had a back country charter that she won. Drive up to Key Largo and met the captain. Got 2 cast in before a storm hit. We had to call it. We rescheduled the trip for Wednesday night. Drove back to Marathon and got everybody and headed to key west for the day.
Tuesday me, Todd and his wife got up early and hit the water. My wife and daughter are not the fishermen. We tried for mahi but only managed 1 small one. The night before, we studied google maps and found a ledge in 1800 feet that looked like a sword spot so we gave it a try. We got tight on our second drop. After a short battle, we had it boat side was new it was close to being legal. Put the tape on it and had an inch and half to spare. My buddy’s wife was on the rod so she gets the credit for the catch but I was the most happy. First sword on the Sailfish. After that we hit the Marathon hump for blackfin. We ended the day with a half dozen in the 5-8 pound range.
Wednesday i I talked everyone into a short trip out so my family could see the beautiful water. We didn’t catch anything but had a good time. Me and the bride drove back up to try for tarpon later that afternoon. We saw plenty but couldn’t get them to bite. We caught several mangrove snapper so we had a great time.
Thursday, the 3 fishermen hit it hard again. We tried for snapper for a while but didn’t have much luck. We pushed out to about 800 feet and found a nice weed line. We trolled for a while then cast for a while. Ended up with 8 mahi for the day.
Friday, we just played in the water. Went for a boat ride to the lighthouse and then loaded the boat for the drive back. Made it home safe and without any trouble. We had a fantastic time.
